Fast bowler Olly Stone is facing an extraordinary few days in October 2024, as he prepares for both a crucial Test match in Pakistan and his wedding to fiancée Jess. The wedding is set for Saturday, October 12, just one day after the conclusion of England’s first Test in Pakistan, scheduled to end on October 11. With a wedding across 5,000 miles, Stone is navigating both his professional commitments and personal life in a delicate balance, describing the situation as “manic, but a nice problem to have.”
Stone, who proposed to Jess in the summer of 2023, has endured a career plagued by injuries, including four stress fractures in his back that led to surgery and the insertion of two screws in 2021. At the time of their engagement, Stone had been out of the Test side for over two years, playing for Nottinghamshire while dealing with recurring hamstring issues. The couple had planned their wedding without anticipating Stone’s potential selection for the Test tour of Pakistan.
However, after several franchise cricket appearances in Australia, South Africa, the UAE, and Pakistan, Stone was recalled to the England squad. His consistent performances, bolstered by regular Pilates sessions to strengthen his body, caught the attention of England’s selectors. Rob Key, England’s managing director, and head coach Brendon McCullum eventually offered Stone a place in the squad for Pakistan. Despite the scheduling conflict, Stone was determined to keep the wedding date intact, a decision he made out of gratitude for Jess’s support throughout his injury-ridden career.
The logistics are helped by a rare Monday start to the first Test, allowing the match to finish before the wedding weekend. Stone remains hopeful that the game won’t last all five days, and even if it does, he is prepared to immediately jet back to the UK. The England squad has sufficient cover, meaning Stone may not be selected for the first two Tests, yet he remains a key part of the fast-bowling contingent.
After the wedding, Stone plans to return to Pakistan for the second Test starting just days later in Multan. Balancing his personal and professional commitments, Stone also looks ahead to England’s busy schedule, including a possible spot in the New Zealand series and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Despite his demanding cricket career, Stone remains grounded, acknowledging the importance of life beyond the sport.
