In a unique intersection of tradition and technology, the Bare Craft platform has empowered over 5,500 artisans, helping preserve traditional Indian crafts while introducing AI to streamline the artisan economy. The platform, co-founded by Himanshi Singh, emerged during the pandemic after witnessing the struggles of artisans like Kamla, a leatherwork master with 25 years of experience. Forced to return to her village in Rajasthan during the pandemic, Kamla’s hardships inspired Himanshi to build a solution that could provide support and opportunity for artisans across India.
Bare Craft’s platform uses AI to address longstanding challenges in the artisan sector, such as supply chain transparency, fair wages, and sustainable production. The AI matches artisans with appropriate projects, allowing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to source high-quality crafts efficiently. Himanshi works pro bono to manage the platform’s market connections while her mother, Kiran Singh, oversees operations with the artisan communities.
One success story is that of Monu Saini, a block-printing artisan from Rajasthan. Through Bare Craft, Monu has trained 25 women in block printing, allowing them to achieve financial independence. His dedication to sustainability has earned him collaborations with international designers, helping blend traditional techniques with modern designs. Monu credits Bare Craft with expanding the reach of his work, which has helped preserve the heritage of block printing while opening new markets for his creations.
The AI-driven system has yielded impressive results, with a 10% increase in revenue for artisans and SMEs and a 50% reduction in production costs. The platform’s algorithm connects buyers with the ideal artisan community based on craft type and location, and even recommends raw materials to reduce production time and costs, all while ensuring fair pay for artisans.
One of Bare Craft’s early triumphs was the creation of a designer dress combining block printing, chikankari embroidery, and kantha work, each crafted by artisans from different cities. This collaborative effort directly supported six artisans and showcased the platform’s potential for fostering inter-regional collaborations. Beyond fashion, Bare Craft also helps artisans repurpose textile waste, like converting hosiery waste into cotton stationery, further promoting sustainability.
Looking ahead, Bare Craft plans to scale its artisan training program to reach 100,000 artisans and achieve a 99% market linkage rate. The platform is also set to introduce digital passports for products, allowing buyers to trace the journey of their purchases from raw materials to the final product, fostering a deeper understanding of the impact behind each craft purchase.
