  • The U.S. opens the world's first AI-powered vertical berry farm.
  • The innovative farm aims to produce 4 million pounds of berries annually.

An innovative leap in agricultural technology has emerged from Richmond, Virginia, where the world’s first large-scale, AI-powered indoor vertical farm for berries has officially begun operations. Named the Plenty Richmond Farm, this facility is poised to produce over four million pounds (1.8 million kg) of strawberries annually, marking a groundbreaking advancement in sustainable food production.

The project is a collaboration between Plenty, a vertical farming company, and the global berry brand Driscoll’s, which specializes in premium strawberries. The strawberries produced at the Plenty Richmond Farm are expected to hit grocery store shelves by early 2025, offering consumers a year-round supply of consistently high-quality berries.

What makes the Plenty Richmond Farm stand out is its vertical farming model, which allows crops to be grown in towering, controlled environments, drastically reducing the land needed for cultivation. Unlike traditional farming, which is reliant on open fields, this method uses advanced technology to manage temperature, light, and humidity, creating the ideal conditions for plant growth and pollination indoors. This controlled environment allows for a more efficient use of resources and results in less waste, while consistently producing premium-quality strawberries.

Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia has highlighted the significance of this project for both the state’s economy and its agricultural future. He emphasized that Plenty’s decision to choose Virginia for this world-first farm reinforces the state’s leading role in the controlled environment agriculture industry. The project is expected to boost local agricultural production, spur economic development, and mitigate environmental risks.

Plenty’s CEO, Arama Kukutai, praised the facility as a transformative model for the agriculture sector. He emphasized that after six years and 200 research trials, the Richmond farm represents the culmination of extensive scientific research aimed at producing strawberries indoors with consistent peak-season flavor. Kukutai also noted that this farm proves vertical farming’s potential to provide crop diversity and large-scale local production, which are key to future-proofing the global food supply chain.

This development is a pivotal moment in the agriculture industry, demonstrating how vertical farming, combined with artificial intelligence, can revolutionize food production. The Plenty Richmond Farm not only showcases the efficiency and sustainability of this model but also sets a new standard for the global berry market.
