Delhi Police have filed a comprehensive chargesheet against Newsclick and its founder, Prabir Purkayastha, implicating them in terror funding, promoting Chinese propaganda, and inciting riots. The document, which spans nearly 8,000 pages, details accusations under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA.
Arrested on October 3 last year by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, Purkayastha and the head of HR, Amit Chakravarty, are currently held at Delhi’s Tihar Jail. The charges include financial transactions allegedly amounting to ₹91 crore, purportedly used to support terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The police assert that Newsclick manipulated geographic data to exclude Kashmir and Aksai Chin from maps of India, echoing Chinese territorial claims. The news platform is also accused of fueling disinformation campaigns related to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and actively participating in the orchestration of the farmers’ protests and the 2020 Delhi riots.
Furthermore, the chargesheet accuses Purkayastha of collusion with Neville Roy Singham, an American millionaire, to publish articles disparaging vaccines produced by Indian pharmaceutical companies. This purported campaign aimed to defame the Indian government’s efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Delhi Police also claim that Purkayastha maintained connections with the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and supported their activities financially. The chargesheet intensifies scrutiny on Newsclick, suggesting that the platform was significantly funded to disseminate Chinese propaganda, raising serious questions about its journalistic independence and integrity.
