A devastating Russian missile attack has destroyed a well-known educational institution in Southern Ukraine, referred to locally as the ‘Harry Potter Castle’ due to its architectural resemblance to a Scottish baronial structure. The strike resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to 30 others, including two children and a pregnant woman, as reported by CNN.

The assault on the iconic building also caused significant damage to nearly 20 residential buildings and various infrastructure facilities. According to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, the missile used was an Iskander ballistic missile paired with cluster munitions, a choice believed to be a deliberate act by Russian forces aimed at maximizing civilian casualties. Debris from the missile was found scattered over a 1.5 km radius from the site of the attack.

In a statement, Ukrainian authorities condemned the attack, emphasizing the indiscriminate nature of the weapon used and its potential for significant civilian harm. The ongoing investigation aims to hold those responsible accountable, with a Ukrainian official stating, “We will find and punish those who give criminal orders to shell peaceful Ukrainian cities.”

On the Russian side, officials claimed to have intercepted a significant missile and drone attack by Ukraine in Crimea. Sergey Aksyonov, the Kremlin-appointed leader in occupied Crimea, advised the public against approaching potential unexploded ordnance and requested that no videos of Russian air defenses be filmed or posted. According to Russian military bloggers, the Ukrainian attack targeted airfields, allegedly using six US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), all reportedly shot down by Russian air defenses.

The strike coincided with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg’s critique of the slow aid delivery to Ukraine by Western allies, which he believes has allowed Russian advances at the war frontline. This ongoing conflict marks over two years since the invasion began.
