In response to a deadly rocket attack on the Kerem Shalom border crossing, Israel launched airstrikes on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, which Israel reported killed three of its soldiers. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected ceasefire proposals, deeming Hamas’s demands unacceptable.
Health authorities in Gaza reported at least 19 fatalities due to Israeli counter-attacks. Ten projectiles were launched from Rafah toward the border crossing, prompting its closure. Talks for a ceasefire in Gaza ended with Hamas stating that its key demands were rebuffed by Israel.
The latest round of negotiations in Cairo concluded without Israeli participation. Israeli media reported a meeting between US CIA Chief William Burns and Prime Minister Netanyahu. Netanyahu denounced international criticism of Israel’s actions, vowing to defend the country independently if necessary.
Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned of a forthcoming “powerful operation” in Rafah and Gaza, accusing Hamas of insincerity in ceasefire discussions. The closure of Kerem Shalom followed warnings of a potential famine in northern Gaza.
Since the conflict erupted in October 2023, casualties in Gaza surpassed 34,000, with over 77,900 injuries. In Israel, approximately 1,200 fatalities were reported. Hamas also holds 252 hostages, with 128 still missing and presumed dead.
