Nepal’s CIB recommends recovery of ₹9k cr from 238 accused in land scam

Kathmandu, 25 Aug : The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal has directed the government to recover ₹9,179 crore from 238 accused in the land allotment scandal. The CIB has booked 286 people in its 700-page chargesheet, filed after enquiry into the scam.

The accused in the scandal include a former Deputy Prime Minister, several ministers, former secretaries and members of big business groups.

Two former Prime Ministers and two former Chief Secretaries were the approver in the case.

The highest recovery has been ordered from the three businessmen who acted as brokers in the deals. CIB has charged Shibhakant Dhakal, Ram Kumar Suvedi, and Meen Bahadur Gurung as the brains behind the scam. CIB has demanded recovery of ₹1,859 crore from the three, ₹684 each from Dhakal and Suvedi, and ₹491 from Gurung.

CIB has demanded recovery of ₹10.51 crore each from ex-Deputy PM Vjay Kumar Gachhdar, ex-ministers Dambar Shreshtha and Sanjay Shah; ₹63.10 crore from former minister Chandra Dev Joshi. Besides recovery of the amount usurped, the CIB has recommended 10 year of imprisonment to all.

Former Secretary Narayan Gopal Malego, Deep Basten, and Chhaviraj Pant have been imposed a fine of ₹10 crore each and Dinesh Adhikari, Ravindra Man Joshi and Yvraj Bhushal have been fined ₹1 crore each. These accused have also been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.

Out of the total accused, 21 have died. The CIB has recommended recovery of ₹1,563 crore from their families. A present Joint Secretary is also one of the accused in the scamSushil Vaidya, who was Dang District Collector, is absconding and the CIB has recommended ₹1 crore from him.

The CIB has recommended recovery of huge sums from prominent business persons including Uma Dhaklani – ₹292 crore; Hat Shamsher Jabra – ₹289 crore; Madhavi Suvedi – ₹288 crore; Shrawan Goel, Kailash Chand Goel, Shivratna Sarda, and Sandipo Sarda – ₹224 crore each.

IN the chargesheet recovery of ₹100 crore or lesser has been recommended by the CIB. The proceedings in the District Court will begin soon.
