The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly criticized derogatory remarks allegedly made by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a key figure in India’s recent Operation Sindoor. As public outrage mounts, NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar emphasized the need to uphold respect for women in the armed forces, calling the comments “extremely unfortunate” and deeply insulting to women serving the nation.

Outrage Over Derogatory Comments

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated and courageous officer of the Indian Army, was recently in the spotlight as part of a tri-services panel that briefed the nation on Operation Sindoor. The operation was launched in retaliation to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the loss of 26 lives. Alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, Col Sofiya Qureshi addressed the media at key airports including Srinagar, Delhi, and Jaipur, highlighting the swift response of Indian forces.

Amid national appreciation for her role, a video surfaced allegedly showing Madhya Pradesh school education minister Vijay Shah making controversial remarks. In the video, Shah is heard saying, “Jinhone humari betiyon ke sindoor ujade the… humne unhiki behen bhej kar ke unki aisi ki taisi karwayi,” which roughly translates to a disrespectful reference implying revenge through Col Sofiya Qureshi’s involvement. The comments sparked widespread criticism across social and political circles.

NCW’s Response and Call for Respect

Without naming Shah directly, NCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar issued a statement via X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It is extremely unfortunate that such statements are being made by some responsible persons which are derogatory and unacceptable towards women.” She emphasized that such remarks undermine not just the dignity of women, but also insult the daughters of the nation who play critical roles in ensuring national security.

Describing Col Sofiya Qureshi as a “proud daughter of this nation,” Vijaya Rahatkar praised her for her courage and dedication, asserting that India stands firmly with such brave women. The NCW has demanded accountability for the remarks and urged society to honour the sacrifices and service of women in uniform. Meanwhile, Shah has offered a public apology, stating he is willing to apologize multiple times if his words hurt society or religious sentiments.
