During a visit to Haryana’s Yamunanagar district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for an 800-megawatt ultra-critical thermal power unit and asserted that India has made massive strides in electricity production over the past decade. Speaking at the event, he drew a stark contrast between the frequent power blackouts under previous Congress governments and India’s current status as a power-exporting nation.
The new thermal power unit is being constructed at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant and is expected to significantly boost the region’s energy output while operating with high efficiency and reduced emissions. Modi credited the BJP’s “double-engine government”—a term often used to refer to BJP rule at both the state and central levels—for accelerating development in Haryana.
Major Infrastructure Boost with Power and Road Projects
Alongside the power project, the Prime Minister also digitally inaugurated the Rewari Bypass, a 14.4-kilometre stretch constructed at a cost of around ₹1,070 crore under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. This bypass is projected to decongest Rewari city and slash travel time between Delhi and Narnaul by nearly an hour. Modi said the project would enhance logistics efficiency and fuel economic growth in the surrounding region by improving connectivity.
Speaking to the crowd, Modi emphasized that the country is now producing twice as much electricity compared to the levels before 2014. “The situation has changed from power shortages and blackouts to surplus generation, and now India is even exporting electricity to neighbouring countries,” he said. He added that the BJP government’s consistent investment in power infrastructure, green energy, and grid modernization has made this transformation possible.
Focus on Clean and Efficient Energy
The Prime Minister also highlighted the technological advancements in the new ultra-critical thermal power unit. These modern systems consume less coal and generate more power, reducing environmental impact. Modi said that such projects align with India’s vision for cleaner, more sustainable energy while ensuring reliable power supply to every household.
Modi concluded his remarks by affirming the government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, particularly in states like Haryana, where development has picked up pace due to coordinated efforts between the centre and state administrations.
