In Mumbai, the political landscape is set for a heated contest as the two factions of Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray, prepare to face off in three of the six parliamentary constituencies during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The constituencies at the heart of this intra-party conflict are Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, and Mumbai North-West. This battle within the Shiv Sena marks a significant phase in the city’s political dynamics, further complicated by traditional rivalries and new alliances forming across the region.
The other seats in Mumbai will see traditional political contests, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress vying for dominance. Notably, the Mumbai North-East constituency will witness a direct contest between the BJP and the Shiv Sena (UBT), signifying crucial battles across the metropolis.
Key candidates include Arvind Sawant from the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction contesting against Yamini Jadhav of the Eknath Shinde faction in Mumbai South, and Rahul Shewale of the Eknath Shinde-led Sena defending his seat against Anil Desai of Sena (UBT) in Mumbai South-Central. In Mumbai North-West, Amol Kirtikar of the Thackeray camp is set to challenge Ravindra Waikar, a recent defector to the Eknath Shinde camp.
Apart from the Shiv Sena’s internal rivalry, notable contests include Congress’s Mumbai unit president Varsha Gaikwad battling against prominent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, fielded by the BJP in Mumbai North-Central, and Union minister Piyush Goyal facing off against Bhushan Patil of the Congress in Mumbai North.
The political scenario in Mumbai is pivotal, with Shiv Sena factions and traditional parties like the BJP and Congress each aiming to consolidate their influence. The elections, scheduled for the fifth and final phase on May 20, are seen as a major electoral test following the political realignments that began in 2019. This contest not only reflects the internal divisions within Shiv Sena but also tests the durability of the alliances formed with the Congress and other parties.
