An explosion rocked the Calso base in Iraq, where the former pro-Iranian paramilitary group Hashed al-Shaabi is stationed, resulting in one fatality and eight injuries, as per reports from AFP. The attack, which caused “material losses” and casualties according to Hashed al-Shaabi’s statement, targeted equipment, weapons, and vehicles stored in warehouses at the base.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, tensions between Iran and Israel have been heightened in the region. Recent incidents include Israel’s attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria, Iran’s subsequent drone and missile assault on Israel, and an alleged Israeli drone strike in Iran near Isfahan, prompting Iran to activate its air defense systems.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, speaking to NBC News, downplayed Friday’s drone attack, stating that a link to Israel had not been proven. However, he issued a stern warning, asserting that any further Israeli actions against Iran’s interests would prompt an immediate and robust response from Tehran.
The US military denied involvement in the strike, refuting reports claiming US airstrikes in Iraq. Amidst escalating tensions between regional adversaries, concerns over potential further escalation loom large, as both Iran and Israel remain on high alert.
The situation underscores the fragile state of affairs in the Middle East, with the specter of conflict looming large over the region.
