In a bold move underscoring its commitment to dominating the artificial intelligence race, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new division aimed at developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) that can match or surpass human intelligence across a wide range of tasks. This significant step comes as part of Meta’s long-term strategy to position itself as a global leader in AI innovation while rapidly expanding its team by attracting top talent from major rivals.
Leadership and Strategic Vision
Heading Meta’s Superintelligence Labs will be Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who steps in as Meta’s newly appointed chief AI officer. Wang, described by Mark Zuckerberg as “the most impressive founder of his generation,” will co-lead the division with Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, who will focus on developing applied AI products and research.
In a note to Meta employees, Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of developing superintelligence as AI progress accelerates, calling it “the beginning of a new era for humanity” and reaffirming his commitment to ensuring Meta leads in this transformative technology race.
Reports indicate that Mark Zuckerberg has personally driven the hiring efforts for MSL, offering competitive packages and even hosting potential hires at his home to secure their commitment. While there were claims from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about Meta offering $100 million signing bonuses, Meta’s CTO dismissed these claims.
Aggressive Hiring from Rivals and New Investments
Meta’s aggressive recruitment strategy has led to the hiring of 11 top AI researchers from competitors, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, a move that has captured industry attention. The list includes Trapit Bansal, co-creator of OpenAI’s o-series models; Shuchao Bi, known for GPT-4o voice and multimodal post-training; Huiwen Chang from Google Research; Ji Lin, who worked on GPT-4 models; and Joel Pobar, who returned to Meta from Anthropic.
Additionally, Jack Rae, Johan Schalkwyk, and Pei Sun from Google, along with Hongyu Ren, Jiahui Yu, and Shengjia Zhao from OpenAI, have joined the new division, strengthening Meta’s expertise in advanced language models and generative AI systems.
Beyond talent acquisition, Meta recently invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, integrating its staff and aligning resources for the development of next-generation large language models under MSL. Meta is also in discussions with AI startups such as Perplexity AI and Runway and is expected to acquire PlayAI, a company specializing in voice replication using AI.
Reflecting Industry-Wide AI Momentum
The launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs is aligned with the broader industry trend of major tech companies intensifying their AI investments. This year alone, Microsoft spent $650 million acquiring much of Inflection AI’s team, while Amazon has made strategic hires from Adept to enhance its AI capabilities.
Meta plans to unify its foundational AI model teams, product development teams, and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division under MSL, with a dedicated focus on building next-generation large language models that can form the backbone of AGI systems.
