West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to visit Sandeshkhali, a riverine island in the North 24 Parganas district, marking her first trip to the area since it became embroiled in a sexual harassment controversy earlier this year. The visit comes as part of a public distribution program and is seen as a significant political move in the wake of the scandal.
The controversy erupted ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, when locals in Sandeshkhali protested against alleged incidents of sexual assault and land grabbing. The accusations were directed at Sheikh Shahjahan, a local strongman affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, and his aides, Shibu Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar. Following the allegations, Sheikh Shahjahan was suspended by the party and later arrested on February 29 after evading authorities for nearly two months. His arrest came after his supporters attacked three Enforcement Directorate officials during their visit to Sandeshkhali on January 5, leaving the officials injured.
In response to the allegations, the Trinamool Congress held a press conference, presenting a video from a sting operation that purportedly showed a former Bharatiya Janata Party leader claiming the controversy was orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party to defame the Trinamool. The ruling party dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, while the Bharatiya Janata Party countered by framing the scandal as an example of the Trinamool’s misrule and the exploitation of women in the state.
The political dynamics in the region intensified as Sandeshkhali gained national attention during the Lok Sabha elections. The Trinamool Congress managed to secure a victory in the Basirhat parliamentary constituency, within which Sandeshkhali falls. Despite the controversy, the win demonstrated the party’s resilience in retaining its stronghold.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced plans to hold a ‘Jana Sanjog Yatra’ in Sandeshkhali the day after Mamata Banerjee’s visit. His rally is expected to address the ongoing allegations and amplify criticism of the Trinamool Congress’s governance in the area.
Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Sandeshkhali underscores the high-stakes nature of the political battle in West Bengal, with both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party vying for influence in the region. The Chief Minister’s presence is anticipated to reassure her party’s supporters while addressing public concerns. However, Suvendu Adhikari’s follow-up rally ensures that the controversy remains a focal point in the state’s volatile political landscape.
