Private schools across Kashmir remained closed today in a collective show of grief and protest after a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam left 26 tourists dead, including two foreign nationals. The attack has sent shockwaves throughout the Valley, prompting educational institutions and civil society to observe a day of mourning and solidarity with the victims’ families.
The strike was initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir Private Schools Association, which held an emergency meeting following the tragedy. During the gathering, tributes were paid to those killed in the attack and prayers were offered for the injured. Senior members of the association, including President Arshad Ali Chaudhary and patron Haji Abdul Hamid Chaudhary, were present to lead the remembrance.
Terrorists targeted a group of tourists in the lush meadows of Pahalgam, Anantnag district, on Tuesday, opening indiscriminate fire that resulted in the deaths of 26 people and injuries to at least 11 others. According to officials, the attack is one of the worst against civilians in recent years and has drawn widespread condemnation both nationally and internationally.
Universities in the region have also responded with cancellations. Jammu University has suspended all academic activities for the day, postponing examinations that were scheduled. Similarly, Kashmir University and Cluster University Srinagar have delayed all exams planned for April 23, with new dates to be announced soon. The move reflects the emotional toll and widespread disruption caused by the incident.
Political leaders across party lines have come together to denounce the brutality. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the assault an “abomination,” noting that the scale of the violence is “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.” His statement underscores the growing concern over the security situation in the Valley.
In response to the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned early from his diplomatic trip to Saudi Arabia and will chair a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting today at 11 AM. The meeting, scheduled at his official residence, is expected to assess the situation and review the government’s next steps in ensuring national security.
