A significant auction featuring Princess Diana’s cherished wardrobe and personal items is set to commence this week in California, marking the largest sale of Princess Diana memorabilia since her passing. Hosted by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, the event will showcase nearly fifty pieces, including gowns, shoes, handbags, and hats.
Titled “Princess Diana’s Elegance & A Royal Collection,” the auction gathers pieces from Princess Diana’s favored designers such as Victor Edelstein, Murray Arbeid, and Catherine Walker. Notable highlights include Arbeid’s blue diamante ball gown worn by the princess at the 1986 London premiere of “The Phantom of the Opera,” and a magenta lace dress crafted by Edelstein. Both items are anticipated to fetch up to $400,000 each.
Gabriela Schwartz of Julien’s Auctions expressed, “We are here celebrating Princess Diana’s elegance with some really standout pieces that Princess Diana wore with pride, emblematic of her style.”
Princess Diana, who married Prince Charles in a globally televised ceremony in 1981, captivated the world with her charm and fashion choices. Despite the fairy tale beginning, their relationship faced challenges and ended in a highly publicized divorce in 1996. Princess Diana’s tragic death in a car accident in Paris in 1997 further solidified her legacy as “The People’s Princess,” revered for her humanitarian work and enduring style icon status.
Last year, a dress worn by Princess Diana at auction fetched an astonishing $1.14 million, underscoring the enduring fascination with her life and legacy. The current collection, having toured internationally, is expected to draw immense interest and bidding is scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
In addition to haute couture garments, the auction will feature footwear from brands like Salvatore Ferragamo, Kurt Geiger, and Rayne, alongside personal letters handwritten by Princess Diana and other memorabilia connected to the British royal family.
