  • Jake Sullivan announces final overseas trip, marking historic US-India progress.

US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan, during his visit to India, stated that it is likely the last overseas trip he will lead in his capacity as NSA. Reflecting on his tenure, Sullivan expressed that he could not think of a better way to conclude his time in the White House than by visiting India and marking the significant strides made in strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations over the past several years. Sullivan’s visit, which included a session at IIT Delhi titled “The United States and India: Building a Shared Future,” focused on the shared vision and progress in multiple sectors including energy, technology, and space cooperation.

A key highlight of Sullivan’s remarks was the announcement of the finalization of steps to remove long-standing regulations that have hindered civil nuclear cooperation between leading nuclear entities in India and US companies. Sullivan emphasized that despite former President George W. Bush and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s vision of civil nuclear cooperation that was laid out nearly two decades ago, it had not been fully realized. However, Sullivan indicated that under the Biden administration, efforts are now in place to overcome these regulatory barriers and open the door for deeper collaboration. This step, he noted, would allow Indian entities that have been previously restricted in the US to engage in significant partnerships with US scientists, technologists, and the private sector to advance civil nuclear cooperation.

Sullivan further elaborated on the broader scope of technological cooperation between the US and India, expressing optimism that it would only grow stronger in the coming years. He outlined the vision of US and Indian companies collaborating on next-generation semiconductor technologies and conducting cutting-edge research in space exploration. He also stressed that these developments would not only boost bilateral cooperation but would have far-reaching implications for clean energy technologies, artificial intelligence, and other advanced sectors.

“I cannot think of a better way to end my tenure in the White House,” Sullivan stated, sharing his pride in the progress made between the two countries. He emphasized that the cooperation and advancements witnessed over the last four years in areas like energy, space exploration, and technology represent a shared and historic achievement. Sullivan expressed his belief that in the next decade, the US and India would continue to lead the way in global innovation through their collaborative efforts.

The session at IIT Delhi also featured remarks from US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, who underscored the strengthening of ties between the US and India, highlighting that the robust relationship has been fostered not only by the governments of the two nations but also by the people, institutions, thinkers, and researchers working together. Garcetti also paid tribute to the late US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100, and acknowledged his pivotal role in laying the foundation for US-India friendship during a difficult period in the 1970s.

Garcetti further recalled how the US had advocated for India’s independence, even challenging its ally, Great Britain, to support India’s pursuit of self-rule. He highlighted how these early acts of solidarity laid the groundwork for the thriving bilateral relationship seen today.

The US Ambassador’s remarks also focused on the Biden administration’s efforts in strengthening US-India relations as the US heads toward the conclusion of its current term. He acknowledged the contributions of various sectors, including government officials, researchers, and investors, who have played a vital role in imagining and building the future of US-India relations.

Sullivan’s visit marks a significant moment in the US-India relationship, reflecting the growing partnership between the two countries across various domains. As both nations continue to collaborate on the global stage, particularly in the fields of technology, energy, and space, the momentum of this relationship is expected to build further in the coming years. With the groundwork laid by the current leadership, the future of US-India relations looks set to be one of continued innovation, collaboration, and shared prosperity.
