In the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stepped in to urge both India and Pakistan to work together and avoid further escalation. In calls with leaders of both countries, Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ support for counter-terrorism efforts and stressed the need for regional peace.
Marco Rubio held a call with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday, during which he expressed condolences and reiterated support for India’s fight against terrorism. Jaishankar later posted on X, stating that the perpetrators, backers, and planners of the Pahalgam attack must be brought to justice.
Rubio’s message to Pakistan
On Wednesday, Rubio also spoke with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to a statement from the US State Department, Marco Rubio urged Pakistan to cooperate fully in the investigation into what he described as an “unconscionable attack.”
He also encouraged Islamabad to condemn the assault and work alongside India to ease growing tensions. Marco Rubio emphasized restoring direct communications and maintaining peace across the region. Both sides, the statement noted, agreed on the importance of holding terrorists accountable.
Tensions rise post-Pahalgam attack
The Pahalgam attack on April 22 has severely strained India-Pakistan relations. With most victims being Indian tourists, public and political outrage has surged. Since then, ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir have also increased.
India has taken several measures in response. These include suspending the Indus Water Treaty, closing the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and reducing diplomatic staff strength in both countries. Additionally, the Indian armed forces have been granted complete operational freedom to respond as they see fit.
Marco Rubio’s outreach reflects Washington’s concern over the volatile situation and its continued emphasis on regional stability. The US has urged both nations to avoid actions that may further inflame tensions and to prioritize dialogue and accountability in response to terrorism.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized the US position, saying the country remains committed to helping India and Pakistan navigate this critical moment through cooperation and restraint.
