Massive protests erupted across Israel on Sunday following the tragic deaths of six hostages in Gaza. The demonstration reflects the growing frustration with the Israeli government’s handling of the ongoing hostage crisis and its failure to secure a ceasefire deal. The protests, with estimates of up to 500,000 participants, took place in major cities including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Demonstrators blocked streets and gathered outside the prime minister’s residence, voicing their demands for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take immediate action to bring home the remaining 101 hostages. Many of these hostages are believed to have died, according to Israeli officials.
The Israeli military confirmed that the bodies of Carmel Gat, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino were recovered from a tunnel in Rafah, southern Gaza. Forensic examinations revealed that the hostages had been killed by close-range gunshots. This news has intensified public outrage, leading to a significant mobilization of people demanding a ceasefire and a resolution to the crisis.
In response to the escalating tension, Israeli labour leaders have called for a general strike, scheduled for Monday, to pressure the government into action. The strike includes a closure of Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s main international gateway. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and opposition leader Yair Lapid have also voiced support for a ceasefire deal.
Prime Minister Netanyahu, under increasing pressure, vowed that Israel would continue its efforts to capture those responsible for the murders. He emphasized that Israel would not rest until the perpetrators were held accountable. On the other hand, senior Hamas officials have accused Netanyahu of being responsible for the deaths, attributing the blame to Israel’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire deal.
U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his outrage and sadness over the deaths of the hostages, stating that Hamas leaders would be held accountable for their actions. He reiterated ongoing efforts to secure a deal for the release of the remaining hostages.
As the situation remains dire, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a temporary pause in fighting to allow for a polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, which has been severely impacted by the conflict. Despite these efforts, violence continues, with recent airstrikes and clashes adding to the toll in the region.
