  • First Vande Bharat sleeper connects Howrah and Kamakhya overnight

India is set to enter a new phase of overnight rail travel with the launch of its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Howrah–Kamakhya route, starting January 22. Designed to combine speed, comfort and modern onboard facilities, the new semi-high-speed sleeper service marks a significant expansion of the Vande Bharat portfolio, which until now has largely focused on daytime chair car operations. Operated and maintained by the Northeast Frontier Railway, the train is expected to offer passengers a faster and more seamless overnight journey between eastern India and the Northeast, while strengthening rail connectivity across West Bengal, Bihar and Assam.

Launch, Route Coverage and Operational Details

The commercial run of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will begin with train number 27576, the Kamakhya–Howrah service, commencing operations on January 22. Its counterpart, train number 27575, the Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, will start running a day later on January 23. According to Indian Railways, the Kamakhya–Howrah service will operate on all days of the week except Wednesday, while the Howrah–Kamakhya train will run daily except Thursday, ensuring near-daily connectivity between the two major stations.

This launch is being seen as a milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to modernise long-distance overnight travel. While conventional sleeper and AC trains have long dominated night journeys, the introduction of a Vande Bharat Sleeper brings advanced technology, improved ride quality and enhanced passenger amenities to a segment that caters to both business and leisure travellers. The train is expected to particularly benefit passengers travelling between West Bengal and the Northeast, regions that witness heavy rail traffic throughout the year.

The route between Howrah and Kamakhya is strategically significant, linking Kolkata’s primary railway hub with Guwahati’s major station, which serves as the gateway to the Northeast. During its journey, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will halt at 13 stations, covering key towns and junctions that play an important role in regional connectivity. The scheduled stoppages include Bandel, Nabadwip Dham, Katwa and Azimganj in West Bengal, followed by New Farakka and Malda Town, which serve as major transit points in the region. The train will then pass through Aluabari Road and New Jalpaiguri, a crucial junction for routes heading towards the hills and the Northeast, before stopping at Jalpaiguri Road and New Cooch Behar.

Further along the route, the train will halt at New Alipurduar and New Bongaigaon, both important stations in Assam, before stopping at Rangiya and finally reaching Kamakhya. By covering this extensive list of stations, the sleeper Vande Bharat aims to balance speed with accessibility, ensuring that passengers from multiple towns benefit from the upgraded service without significantly increasing travel time.

In terms of scheduling, the Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper, train number 27575, will depart Howrah at 6.20 pm and reach Kamakhya at 8.20 am the next day. In the reverse direction, train number 27576 will leave Kamakhya at 6.15 pm and arrive in Howrah at 8.15 am the following morning. The total journey time for the entire route is expected to be around 14 hours, making it a competitive option compared to existing overnight trains on the same corridor.

Two dedicated train rakes will be deployed on the Howrah–Kamakhya–Howrah route to ensure smooth and reliable operations. This deployment strategy is aimed at minimising disruptions and maintaining punctuality, a key factor in enhancing passenger confidence in premium train services. The Northeast Frontier Railway zone, which will operate and maintain the service, has been entrusted with ensuring high standards of upkeep and operational efficiency for the new train.

Coach Composition, Onboard Comfort and Fare Structure

One of the defining features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is its modern coach composition, designed to cater exclusively to air-conditioned sleeper travel. The train will consist of a total of 16 coaches, offering a mix of accommodation options to suit different passenger preferences. The composition includes 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches and one AC first class coach, reflecting a focus on comfort and premium travel rather than unreserved or non-AC categories.

This configuration is expected to appeal to a wide range of travellers, from families and professionals to long-distance commuters who prefer overnight journeys that allow them to arrive at their destination early in the morning. The inclusion of an AC first class coach further underscores the premium positioning of the service, offering enhanced privacy and comfort for passengers willing to pay a higher fare.

While Indian Railways has not officially detailed all onboard features, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to incorporate several modern amenities associated with the Vande Bharat brand. These typically include ergonomically designed berths, improved suspension systems for a smoother ride, automated doors, modern lighting and enhanced safety features. The focus on passenger comfort is particularly important for overnight journeys, where quality of sleep and a quiet, stable environment play a crucial role in the overall travel experience.

The fare structure for the new sleeper service reflects its premium status while remaining competitive within the existing rail ecosystem. Ticket prices are expected to start at around Rs 2,300 for AC three-tier accommodation, making it accessible to a broad segment of travellers seeking a faster and more comfortable alternative to conventional sleeper trains. The AC two-tier fare is expected to be approximately Rs 3,000, while the AC first class fare is likely to be around Rs 3,600 for a one-way journey.

These fares position the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a mid-to-premium option, offering upgraded facilities at a price point that remains significantly lower than air travel on the same route. For passengers travelling between Kolkata and Guwahati, the train provides an overnight option that eliminates the need for hotel stays and reduces the overall cost and fatigue associated with long-distance travel.

The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Howrah–Kamakhya route is also expected to have a broader impact on rail travel patterns in the region. By offering a faster and more comfortable overnight service, Indian Railways aims to attract passengers who might otherwise choose flights or private buses, particularly during peak travel seasons. The improved connectivity is likely to benefit tourism, business travel and cultural exchanges between eastern India and the Northeast.

From an operational perspective, the launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper also serves as a test case for future expansion of sleeper variants on other long-distance routes. If the service proves successful in terms of passenger response, punctuality and maintenance, it could pave the way for similar trains on corridors connecting major cities across different parts of the country.

The Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper thus represents more than just a new train service. It reflects a shift in Indian Railways’ approach towards modernising overnight travel, blending speed, comfort and reliability in a segment that has traditionally seen limited innovation. As the train begins its commercial run from January 22, all eyes will be on how passengers respond to this new offering and how it reshapes expectations from long-distance rail journeys in India.
