In a major step towards advancing their strategic partnership, senior diplomats from India and the United Kingdom met in New Delhi on Tuesday to assess progress and chart a course for the future of bilateral relations. Sir Oliver Robbins, Permanent Under-Secretary at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), held high-level talks with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during the annual UK-India Foreign Office Consultations. The meeting focused on key areas such as trade, defence, technology, and counter-terrorism, reflecting the growing alignment of priorities between the two nations.
Bilateral Focus: Trade, Technology and Defence
Both sides welcomed the breakthroughs achieved since the last consultations held in London, particularly the announcement of a historic trade agreement. The deal, which marks a new chapter in economic ties, is expected to unlock fresh opportunities for investment and collaboration across sectors. Sir Oliver and Mr Misri emphasized the importance of turning the shared vision of the two Prime Ministers into concrete progress over the coming decade.
A significant feature of this year’s talks was the launch of the Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue. This new platform is designed to build mutual understanding in critical areas such as defence manufacturing and emerging technologies, laying the groundwork for future joint ventures and knowledge sharing. Both countries agreed to identify sectors for cooperation that could bolster their national capabilities while fostering global innovation.
Shared Global Outlook and Terrorism Concerns
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the consultations allowed both countries to take stock of their wide-ranging relationship, including cooperation in finance, climate, health, education, and people-to-people ties. India also appreciated the UK’s continued support in the global fight against terrorism, highlighting shared concerns around regional security.
Sir Oliver Robbins expressed his optimism about the partnership’s future, stating that both governments are committed to pushing the relationship to new heights in a rapidly changing world. He also noted the significance of India as one of the UK’s closest partners globally.
Beyond the consultations, Sir Oliver is expected to meet officials from various Indian ministries, including those overseeing G20-related issues and internal security. These meetings aim to deepen collaboration on global governance and regional stability, reinforcing the importance of the India-UK relationship in addressing shared international challenges.
