In a sharp and clear stance on the global stage, India launched a strong rebuttal against Pakistan at the United Nations, accusing it of remaining entrenched in terrorism and fanaticism while attempting to misuse international forums for its narrow political interests. The remarks were delivered during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate on Tuesday, where India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, directly countered what he described as “juvenile disinformation” spread by Pakistan’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar.
Ambassador Harish highlighted the stark difference between the two South Asian neighbours, stating, “On one hand there is India – a matured democracy, a surging economy, a pluralistic and inclusive society. At the other extreme is Pakistan, steeped in fanaticism and terrorism, and a serial borrower from the IMF.” His remarks framed the debate with a clear comparison that underscored India’s position as a responsible actor on the global stage while calling out Pakistan’s conduct as a state sponsor of extremist violence.
India Highlights Pahalgam Attack and Operation Sindoor
Referring to Pakistan’s continuous attempts to misuse multilateral platforms, Ambassador Harish criticised Islamabad’s hypocrisy, saying it was inappropriate for any member of the council to preach about peace while supporting practices that are globally unacceptable. He further reiterated India’s commitment as a founding member of the UN to work towards a peaceful, just, and equitable world, stating that India has consistently engaged with global partners to strengthen the world order based on rules, dialogue, and mutual respect.
In a direct reference to Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism, Harish reminded the Council of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 innocent civilians were killed by Pakistan-based terrorists. He highlighted India’s precise and non-escalatory response with Operation Sindoor on May 7, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). The operation, while resulting in a brief period of heightened tension and cross-border firing, ended with a ceasefire on May 10, which Harish noted was agreed upon at Pakistan’s direct request. This point subtly corrected claims made by US President Donald Trump, who had recently asserted that it was the US that brokered peace between India and Pakistan during the escalation.
India Reiterates Zero Tolerance on Terrorism
Ambassador Harish used the opportunity to reaffirm India’s consistent stand on zero tolerance towards terrorism, calling it a fundamental principle that the global community must uphold universally. His remarks highlighted the rising frustration in the international community with states that either sponsor or turn a blind eye towards extremist violence while positioning themselves as peace advocates in global forums.
India’s address at the United Nations reflected a clear intent to assert its commitment towards peace while maintaining a firm stance against terrorism, setting the tone for its continued engagement at global forums where it seeks accountability from states that misuse these platforms to promote propaganda and deflect responsibility for violent extremism.
