India has strongly criticized Pakistan for its persistent references to Jammu and Kashmir during a United Nations debate on peacekeeping reforms. At the UN Security Council, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, dismissed Pakistan’s statements as “unwarranted” and reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral part of India.
Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish condemned Pakistan’s repeated attempts to bring up Jammu and Kashmir in global forums, stating that such references neither validate Pakistan’s claims nor justify its long-standing support for cross-border terrorism. “India is compelled to note that the delegate of Pakistan has yet again resorted to unwarranted remarks on the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Such repeated references neither validate their illegal claims nor justify their state-sponsored cross-border terrorism,” he asserted.
He further called upon Pakistan to refrain from diverting discussions at international platforms to suit its narrow political objectives. “Pakistan must not use such forums to drive its parochial and divisive agenda,” he said. Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish also pointed out that Pakistan continues to “illegally occupy” parts of Jammu and Kashmir and urged Islamabad to vacate the territory.
The Indian envoy’s response followed remarks by Syed Tariq Fatemi, the Special Assistant to the Pakistani Prime Minister, who raised the Jammu and Kashmir issue during a discussion on the future of UN peacekeeping. India has consistently rejected such attempts by Pakistan, emphasizing that the region is an integral and inalienable part of the country.
India has maintained that it seeks peaceful and cooperative relations with Pakistan, but has stressed that Islamabad must first create an atmosphere free of terrorism and hostility. In a recent podcast with US-based podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed that every effort by India to foster peace with Pakistan has been met with hostility and betrayal. He recalled his 2014 invitation to then-Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in ceremony, describing it as an unprecedented diplomatic gesture. However, he lamented that despite such goodwill efforts, Pakistan continued to act in a hostile manner. “Yet, every noble attempt at fostering peace was met with hostility and betrayal. We sincerely hope that wisdom prevails upon them and they choose the path of peace,” PM Modi remarked.
He also called out Pakistan’s long-standing role in supporting terrorism and reiterated that the global community is now well aware of the origins of terrorist activities. India continues to push for a global consensus against terrorism while ensuring its firm stance on matters of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
