In a remarkable initiative, India Post’s Maharashtra & Goa Circle has introduced a unique series of postcards showcasing penguins from Antarctica. These special postcards, which feature the flightless birds in their natural Antarctic habitat, are set to embark on a journey to India, courtesy of the 44th Antarctic Expedition organized by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR). The postcards were unveiled by Vandita Kaul, Secretary (Posts) of the Union Ministry of Communications, at a ceremony held at the General Post Office in Mumbai. The event was attended by several postal officials, including Chief Postmaster General Amitabh Singh, PMGs Suchita Joshi (Mumbai) and R.K. Jayabhaye (Pune), as well as philatelists and staff members.
The postcards feature three of the 18 penguin species that inhabit the Antarctic region: the majestic Emperor Penguin, the regal King Penguin, and the smaller, but equally charming, Adelie Penguin. The flightless birds are often considered symbols of the frozen Antarctic landscape, which spans over 14.2 million square kilometers. These specially designed postcards, with a total of 1,500 cards (250 of each image), will be taken on the upcoming expedition from Goa, scheduled to set sail around December 13. They will be carried to India’s research stations in Antarctica, including Dakshin Gangotri, Maitri, and Bharati.
Ravi Mishra, a scientist from NCPOR who is leading the 44th Antarctic Expedition, will serve as the designated “special postman” for this unique initiative. The postcards will be stamped at the Indian research stations in Antarctica, bearing the special postmark of ‘Bharati Branch Office’ and ‘Maitri Branch Office,’ which are the only overseas post offices of India. The postmarked postcards will then be brought back to India by the expedition team in late 2024.
These special postcards are part of India Post’s ongoing tradition of releasing themed postcards focused on Antarctica. Previous years have seen postcards featuring themes like Antarctic flora and fauna, icebergs, the aura of Aurora, and the Bharati Station. In addition to the penguin postcards, a permanent pictorial cancellation commemorating the geographical indication (GI) tag for Mahabaleshwar strawberries was also released, alongside a new slogan cancellation celebrating the “Festival of Stamps” for Mahapex-2025.
The unveiling of the penguin-themed postcards not only highlights India’s commitment to preserving the unique ecological and scientific significance of Antarctica but also showcases the enduring legacy of India Post in promoting cultural and environmental awareness through its philatelic initiatives.
