India has secured the 39th position out of 119 countries in the Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024, released by the World Economic Forum. This achievement has been attributed to improved infrastructure and favorable government policies. Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, highlighted that while India was ranked 54th in 2021, the new methodology adjusted its position to 38th.
Under government initiatives like Swadesh Darshan and PRASAD schemes, infrastructure at tourist destinations has been significantly enhanced, giving a strong boost to the tourism industry. Additionally, the Advantage Healthcare India portal, launched for medical value travel, has promoted international medical tourism, establishing India as a cost-effective global medical tourism hub.
Earlier this week, President Droupadi Murmu discussed India’s growing potential in medical tourism. She stated that India is emerging as a leading global hub for affordable medical tourism, with its doctors playing a vital role in this development. The President remarked, “People from other countries come to India to avail themselves of high-quality and affordable medical facilities.”
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also emphasized India’s rich cultural and historical heritage. He pointed out that India boasts 5,000 years of civilizational history, 43 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 56 potential World Heritage Sites, and approximately 3,500 monuments of national importance. These sites stand as a testament to India’s global strength and cultural diversity.
To further promote tourism, the government has focused extensively on infrastructure development. A 150,000-kilometer-long road network has been established, 500 new air routes have been developed, 150 new airports have been constructed, and high-speed trains like Vande Bharat have been introduced.
These achievements are positioning India not only as a key player in the tourism sector but also as a prominent force on the global stage. This progress is strengthening the nation’s economy and enhancing India’s positive image worldwide.
