India gears up for what is anticipated to be the world’s largest democratic election, with close to one billion voters heading to the polls on Friday to choose their next government and determine the fate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
The 2024 general elections are scheduled to unfold in seven phases over the next six weeks, commencing on April 19.
Voters will cast their ballots to fill the seats of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament, for the upcoming five-year term. The Lok Sabha holds significant power compared to the upper house.
Analysts widely predict another decisive victory for Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections.
India’s economic ascendancy under Modi’s leadership has been remarkable, with the nation now boasting the world’s fifth-largest economy, valued at $3.7 trillion. The country aims to secure the position of the world’s third-largest economy by 2027.
With a population of 1.4 billion, India is the fastest-growing economy globally, achieving a growth rate of 7.2% in fiscal 2022-2023, the second-highest among G20 nations.
The International Monetary Fund forecasts India’s economy to grow by 6.8% in 2024 and 6.5% in 2025, outpacing China’s projected growth rates.
Amidst this economic prowess, India’s stock market surpassed Hong Kong’s in December to become the fourth largest globally, now valued at over $4 trillion.
Experts anticipate Modi clinching a third consecutive term, further propelling India’s economic trajectory.
While private and foreign investments have remained subdued and exports have declined, Modi’s reelection could bolster U.S.-India relations and position India as a key ally against China, according to analysts.
The main contenders in the election are Modi’s BJP-led coalition, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and the opposition coalition known as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), led by the Indian National Congress.
Despite a coalition of over 40 opposition parties forming the INDIA alliance last year, it is widely expected that Modi’s BJP will secure victory once again.
Unemployment remains a top concern for voters, with rising costs and declining quality of life also weighing heavily on citizens’ minds, according to surveys.
The election, expected to cost more than the 2020 U.S. presidential election, will last 44 days and involve approximately 968 million registered voters, including 48% women and 18 million first-time voters.
Results are slated to be announced on June 4, following a massive electoral process involving millions of polling stations, electronic voting machines, and staff and security personnel overseeing the proceedings.
