Ghulam Nabi Azad, chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), took aim at Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, accusing the Congress leader of being “hesitant” to contest from states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Addressing public gatherings in Sangaldan and Ukhral areas of Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, Azad also rebuked National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah, characterizing both Gandhi and Abdullah as “spoon-fed kids.”
Azad alleged that Gandhi tends to seek refuge in states with significant minority populations rather than confronting the BJP directly. He questioned Gandhi’s reluctance to contest in BJP-ruled states despite claiming to be fighting against the party.
Campaigning in support of his party’s candidate GM Saroori, Azad criticized the Congress for what he perceived as a reluctance to engage in direct confrontations with the BJP and a preference for “safe seats” in minority-dominated regions like Kerala.
Azad further criticized both Gandhi and Abdullah, asserting that they have not made personal sacrifices in their political careers and are merely beneficiaries of political legacies inherited from prominent figures like Indira Gandhi and Sheikh Abdullah.
Referring to Abdullah’s campaign in the Chenab valley against the DPAP, Azad accused him of attempting to divide secular votes rather than challenging the BJP directly. He also condemned Gandhi and Abdullah for their support of Lal Singh, a politician who endorsed the perpetrators of the Kathua rape case.
Azad characterized their actions as worse than those of the BJP and criticized their failure to fulfill promises of holding Singh accountable.
