India and South Africa are set to face off in the fourth T20 International of the five-match series on December 17, with the hosts holding a 2–1 advantage and an opportunity to clinch the contest at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. As the series approaches its decisive phase, both teams arrive with contrasting pressures—India aiming to secure an unassailable lead, and South Africa fighting to stay alive. Team combinations, player fitness concerns, and pitch conditions are expected to play a major role in shaping the outcome of this high-stakes encounter.

India eye series win amid injury concerns and leadership focus

India enter the fourth T20I with momentum firmly on their side after taking a 2–1 lead in the series. A victory in Lucknow would give the Men in Blue a commanding 3–1 advantage, effectively sealing the series with one match still to play. However, the team management faces a few selection challenges ahead of the contest, with Axar Patel ruled out of the remainder of the series due to illness and uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s availability after he missed the third T20I.

In the absence of major changes, India are expected to persist with the same playing XI that featured in the previous match, relying on a balanced combination of aggressive batting and varied bowling options. The predicted lineup includes Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill at the top, followed by captain Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube in the middle order. Jitesh Sharma is likely to continue as wicketkeeper, while the bowling attack is expected to feature Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakaravarthy.

Much of the spotlight will be on captain Suryakumar Yadav, whose recent batting form has not matched his usual high standards. Despite this, his leadership record in T20Is remains impressive, with India winning a significant majority of matches under his captaincy. With the T20 World Cup scheduled early next year, the Indian camp will be keen to see their skipper regain confidence with the bat, especially in pressure situations.

The Ekana Stadium pitch is expected to offer decent assistance to batters early on, while spinners could come into play as the match progresses. India’s bowling combination, particularly the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy, could prove decisive in the middle overs if conditions slow down. Overall, the hosts will be looking for a complete performance to close out the series and build momentum heading into future international assignments.

South Africa seek revival as head-to-head battle intensifies

For South Africa, the fourth T20I represents a must-win scenario. Trailing 1–2 in the series, the Proteas need a strong showing in Lucknow to force a decider in the final match. Their predicted playing XI features an experienced and explosive batting lineup, with Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock expected to open, followed by captain Aiden Markram, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, and Donovan Ferreira. The bowling unit is likely to be led by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, and George Linde.

Quinton de Kock remains a key figure for South Africa, especially given his proven ability to dominate Indian bowlers in the powerplay. His blistering 46-ball 90 in the second T20I demonstrated how quickly he can change the complexion of a match. On a pitch that may favour batting early, South Africa will be hoping for another impactful performance from the left-hander to set up a competitive total or chase.

Historically, India hold the upper hand in T20I encounters between the two sides. Out of 34 matches played, India have won 20 while South Africa have emerged victorious on 13 occasions. This statistical advantage adds to India’s confidence, but South Africa’s recent performances suggest they remain capable of staging a comeback if key players deliver under pressure.

The Ekana Stadium, hosting this crucial encounter, is expected to draw significant attention as fans anticipate a competitive contest between two top T20 sides. With series momentum, individual form, and future tournament preparations all at stake, the fourth T20I promises to be a closely watched affair.

For viewers, the match will be broadcast live on the Star Sports network, with live streaming available on the JioHotstar app and website. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM IST, setting the stage for an evening of high-intensity cricket as India and South Africa battle for supremacy.
