Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz marked the start of a significant diplomatic engagement on January 12, 2026, by jointly inaugurating the International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad, combining cultural celebration with strategic dialogue between India and Germany.

The visit began on a symbolic note as the two leaders paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the historic Sabarmati Ashram, reflecting shared democratic values, commitment to peace, and respect for history. From the ashram, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz proceeded to the Sabarmati Riverfront, where they formally inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026 amid vibrant celebrations and enthusiastic crowds.

The event, held against the backdrop of Gujarat’s long-standing kite-flying tradition, showcased how cultural diplomacy continues to play a central role in India’s engagement with global partners. Visuals from the riverfront captured both leaders interacting with participants, observing intricately designed kites, and even flying kites together, drawing applause from spectators and international visitors alike. The presence of the German Chancellor at one of India’s most iconic cultural festivals underlined Berlin’s intent to deepen people-to-people ties alongside political and economic cooperation.

Chancellor Merz’s visit to India, his first official trip since assuming office, comes at a time when India and Germany are marking 25 years of their strategic partnership. Officials from both sides have emphasized that the visit aims to review progress across multiple sectors, including trade, clean energy, technology, education, and skill development, while also addressing regional and global challenges.

Cultural Diplomacy at the Sabarmati Riverfront

The International Kite Festival, held annually in Ahmedabad ahead of Makar Sankranti, has evolved into a global cultural platform attracting participants from across continents. The 2026 edition features 135 international kite enthusiasts from 50 countries, alongside 65 flyers from different parts of India and more than 800 local participants from Gujarat. The festival will continue for three days, concluding on January 14, filling the skies over Ahmedabad with colorful kites representing diverse cultures and artistic traditions.

This year’s festival gained added international prominence with the joint participation of Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz. Several kites displayed motifs inspired by both leaders, symbolizing friendship and cooperation between India and Germany. Organizers noted that such motifs reflect how global events can foster mutual respect and understanding beyond formal diplomatic settings.

For Prime Minister Modi, the festival also served as an opportunity to highlight India’s cultural heritage and its role in strengthening international ties. Addressing officials on the sidelines, he underscored that cultural exchanges help build trust and familiarity, which are essential foundations for long-term strategic partnerships. German officials echoed similar sentiments, stating that experiencing local traditions offers valuable insight into India’s social fabric and creative energy.

Chancellor Merz’s itinerary in Ahmedabad also included interactions related to skill development, an area where Germany has been a long-standing partner for India. Germany’s expertise in vocational training and dual education systems has influenced several Indian initiatives aimed at enhancing employability among youth. Officials indicated that such engagements reinforce Germany’s commitment to supporting India’s demographic dividend through knowledge sharing and institutional collaboration.

Strategic Partnership Talks in Gandhinagar

Following the cultural engagements in Ahmedabad, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz were scheduled to travel to Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in Gandhinagar for high-level bilateral discussions. These meetings are expected to focus on reviewing the progress of the India-Germany strategic partnership, which has expanded significantly over the past quarter century.

Delegation-level talks are set to cover a wide range of issues, including economic cooperation, investment flows, climate action, renewable energy, digital transformation, and defense collaboration. Germany remains one of India’s most important partners in Europe, with strong trade links and growing collaboration in emerging technologies such as green hydrogen, artificial intelligence, and sustainable manufacturing.

In the evening, Prime Minister Modi is slated to join extended talks between officials from both countries, culminating in a joint press statement outlining key outcomes of the visit. According to officials, the leaders will also exchange views on regional and global developments, reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order.

The Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz will engage with business and industry leaders during the visit, reflecting the emphasis both governments place on private-sector participation in bilateral relations. Germany is among the largest European investors in India, while Indian companies continue to expand their footprint in the German market, particularly in information technology, automotive components, and pharmaceuticals.

Chancellor Merz’s arrival in Gujarat earlier on Monday was marked by heightened attention, with activists raising concerns related to the case of Ariha Shah, a five-year-old Indian citizen currently in Germany. While the primary focus of the visit remains on strengthening bilateral ties, the issue has previously been discussed at diplomatic levels, highlighting the complexity of people-centric issues within international relations.

Overall, the combination of cultural celebration at the Sabarmati Riverfront and substantive diplomatic engagement in Gandhinagar underscores the multidimensional nature of India-Germany relations. By beginning the visit with a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and participation in a traditional festival, both leaders set a tone that blends heritage with forward-looking cooperation, reflecting the evolving character of global diplomacy in the twenty-first century.
