India emphasizes the significance of the long-term agreement with Iran regarding the Chabahar port project, stating it will benefit Afghanistan, Central Asia, and the wider region.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India’s commitment to the Chabahar port, highlighting its role as a vital connectivity hub for landlocked nations like Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.
The comments follow recent concerns raised by the United States regarding potential sanctions after the deal between India and Iran.
India and Iran recently inked a 10-year agreement, facilitating Indian operations at the Chabahar port. India Ports Global Limited has been overseeing port operations since 2018 on an interim lease basis.
Randhir Jaiswal underscored India’s humanitarian efforts via the port, including the provision of essential supplies like wheat, pulses, and pesticides to Afghanistan.
The Chabahar port, situated in Iran’s Sistan-Balochistan province, serves as a strategic point for enhancing trade and connectivity between India, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.
Acknowledging the importance of the Chabahar port for humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, Randhir Jaiswal reiterated External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s stance that a broader perspective should be taken regarding the agreement.
The project’s significance in facilitating regional trade and providing economic alternatives for Afghanistan has been recognized by the United States, according to Jaiswal.
