On Saturday, Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, released four Israeli female soldiers as part of a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the prolonged 15-month war in Gaza. The soldiers – Karina Ariev, Daniela Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag – were handed over to the Red Cross in Gaza before being transferred to Israeli military forces, according to AFP.
The release marks the second prisoner exchange since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19. This deal saw Hamas free the four soldiers in exchange for approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The first exchange earlier this week involved Hamas releasing three Israeli civilians in return for 90 Palestinian prisoners.
The four soldiers were stationed at an observation post on the Gaza border and were abducted during the October 7, 2023, assault on Israel. Hamas fighters overran their base, taking them captive. One of the soldiers was reportedly held by Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian militant faction, according to a Palestinian source cited by Reuters.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar and Egypt with backing from the United States, represents the first major halt in hostilities since a brief truce in November 2023 that lasted only a week. The agreement has paused fighting and includes a phased approach to hostage exchanges and military de-escalation. In the initial six-week phase of the deal, Hamas is set to release 33 hostages, including children, women, older men, and the sick and injured. This will be in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli custody. During this period, Israeli forces are expected to withdraw from certain positions in the Gaza Strip.
The agreement outlines further negotiations in the subsequent phase for the release of remaining hostages, which include military-age men. This phase will also discuss the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a region devastated by over a year of intense conflict and bombardment.
The ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope for an end to the hostilities that have inflicted immense human and infrastructural damage on Gaza and Israel. However, the complex dynamics of the conflict and the challenges of implementing the agreement leave the long-term stability of the region uncertain.
