A family in Florida is seeking more than $80,000 in compensation from NASA after a piece of space debris crashed through the roof of their home, a law firm disclosed on Friday. The incident has highlighted concerns over space debris management amid increasing space activities.
The law firm Cranfill Sumner emphasized that NASA’s response to this claim could establish a precedent for future cases involving space debris. The debris, weighing 700 grams, struck Alejandro Otero’s residence in Naples, Florida, on March 8, creating a hole in the roof.
NASA later identified the object as part of a cargo pallet containing used batteries that had been discarded from the International Space Station in 2021. Contrary to expectations of complete disintegration upon reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, a section of the pallet remained intact, leading to the impact.
According to the law firm, Otero’s son was present in the house when the debris struck. They underscored that NASA has a six-month timeframe to respond to the compensation claim.
“My clients are seeking adequate compensation to address the stress and disruption caused by this incident,” stated lawyer Mica Nguyen Worthy. “While they are relieved that there were no physical injuries, the potential consequences could have been devastating.”
NASA has not yet commented on the claim, despite requests for information from AFP. The incident underscores the growing issue of space debris management and the potential risks associated with objects returning to Earth from orbit.
