In a move aimed at enhancing user trust and safety, Google has rolled out a new feature on its Play Store that will help users easily identify trusted and secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) applications. On Tuesday, the tech giant announced the introduction of a verified badge specifically for VPN apps that meet its privacy and security standards. This badge will signify that an app complies with the company’s stringent Play safety guidelines, ensuring that users can make informed choices when selecting a VPN.

As part of the announcement, Google highlighted that consumer-facing VPN apps which pass the security and privacy standards will now carry the verified badge, making them more visible in the Play Store. The badge will appear in various places, including search results, app detail pages, and in a dedicated section listing VPNs that have earned the verification. Popular VPN services such as NordVPN, Aloha Browser, and hide.me have already earned this prestigious verification, helping them stand out in a crowded marketplace of VPN providers.

The verified badge is part of Google’s broader initiative to improve the overall user experience and to foster transparency in the increasingly crowded VPN market. In the past, Google had already introduced features such as a Play Store banner for VPNs and a Data Safety declaration to provide users with more information about the apps they are downloading. The new verified badge complements these features, providing another level of assurance that the app meets Google’s privacy and safety requirements.

To earn the verified badge, VPN apps must meet several important criteria. First, they must complete a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation. This step involves an in-depth security assessment, where Google evaluates public versions of the apps and provides feedback and guidance on how to address any security vulnerabilities that may be detected. Although passing this assessment does not guarantee that the app will be awarded the badge, meeting this requirement significantly enhances the app’s chances.

In addition to the MASA validation, VPN apps must fulfill several other conditions, including having an organization developer account type, meeting the target API level requirements for Google Play apps, and having at least 10,000 installs and 250 user reviews. The app must also have been available on the Play Store for at least 90 days. Moreover, developers must submit a Data Safety section declaration, opt into an independent security review, and implement encryption in transit to further ensure users’ privacy and security.

The introduction of the verified badge is a significant step forward in Google’s ongoing efforts to improve safety and privacy for users of its Play Store. Google claims that the badge will not only help users make more confident decisions about which VPN apps to download but also help developers enhance the credibility of their apps. By meeting these rigorous standards, VPN apps can gain greater visibility and trust among users, potentially attracting more installs and building a stronger reputation in the competitive VPN space.

At present, the verified badge has been awarded to several leading VPN services, including NordVPN, hide.me, and Aloha Browser. These apps have already begun to benefit from the enhanced credibility that the verified badge brings, allowing them to stand out from the competition and provide users with greater assurance regarding their privacy and security.

With increasing concerns over online privacy and the growing importance of VPNs in protecting personal data, this new initiative by Google is expected to be welcomed by both users and developers alike. By making it easier for users to identify trustworthy VPN apps, Google is playing a key role in enhancing the overall security of the digital ecosystem, fostering more transparency, and encouraging higher standards within the VPN market.

As the demand for VPN services continues to rise globally, the verified badge could become a crucial marker for users seeking secure, reliable, and privacy-conscious VPN apps. With the Play Store now offering a more trustworthy and transparent platform for users, it is likely that more VPN developers will strive to meet Google’s high standards to earn the verified badge and attract a larger user base.
