On the morning of July 16, users across the globe woke up to find ChatGPT and other OpenAI services unresponsive, leaving many unable to log in, complete tasks, or continue conversations they had started the previous day. The outage, which affected a significant portion of OpenAI’s global user base, also impacted Sora, Codex, and the GPT API, causing frustration for developers, content creators, and individuals who rely on these AI tools for work and personal use.
Widespread Disruptions Reported
According to Downdetector, the issues began around 6 AM IST, with complaints peaking just over an hour later. About 91 per cent of the issues reported were directly related to ChatGPT, with users encountering login verification loops, blank chat screens, and mid-conversation interruptions that resulted in lost data. Some users reported being completely locked out, while others faced slow API responses and performance issues with Sora and Codex, tools that are critical for real-time programming assistance and video generation.
Developers dependent on Codex for coding tasks and creative professionals using Sora for generating visual content faced delays, hampering productivity and planned deliverables. The global nature of the outage became evident as users from India, other parts of Asia, Europe, and the United States shared their frustrations online, posting screenshots of errors and discussing the disruption’s impact on their workflow.
OpenAI’s Response and Service Recovery
OpenAI acknowledged the service disruptions on its official status page, stating: “We have identified elevated error rates and are working on a mitigation.” The company reported degraded performance across multiple services and noted an unexpected change involving ChatGPT’s connectors, which had been automatically enabled during the incident. While OpenAI initially did not confirm the root cause of the disruption or provide a recovery timeline, the team actively communicated that they were investigating the issues across all affected platforms.
Later, OpenAI confirmed that the problems had been resolved, updating its status page with the message: “All impacted services have now fully recovered.” This marks the second significant outage faced by OpenAI in the past month, raising concerns among regular users and developers who heavily depend on these tools for daily operations, content generation, and creative projects.
While the immediate issues have been addressed, the incident highlights the dependency many professionals and creators have developed on AI tools like ChatGPT, underlining the need for robust system stability and clear communication during outages to mitigate workflow disruptions for millions globally.
