The World Food Programme (WFP) has run out of food in Gaza after Israel’s blockade, leaving the region on the brink of famine, according to the United Nations. The blockade, which began on March 2, has halted the flow of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip. As a result, the WFP, responsible for distributing essential food aid, has exhausted its resources, and there is no sign that additional supplies will be allowed in anytime soon.
Blockade Leads to Shortage of Essential Supplies
Israel’s complete blockade has left Gaza in a desperate situation, with essential supplies like flour, sugar, and cooking oil running out across the region. The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has raised alarms about the imminent threat of famine, as Gaza’s markets are emptying of the most basic necessities. In light of these dire circumstances, the WFP has warned that Gaza is facing a breaking point, where people have run out of ways to cope with the shortage of food and supplies. The last remaining food supplies, which were delivered to kitchens preparing hot meals, have been used up, and no new aid has been able to enter Gaza for more than seven weeks.
Despite the worsening situation, Israel has indicated that it has no plans to ease the blockade or allow humanitarian assistance into Gaza. Last week, Israel’s military chief, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, announced that Israel would intensify its military operations if there is no progress in ceasefire and hostage release talks.
Humanitarian Efforts Stalled Amid Continued Airstrikes
The blockade has not only hindered the supply of food but has also devastated critical infrastructure used for humanitarian relief operations. According to the UN, Israeli airstrikes have destroyed at least 36 heavy machines, including excavators and water trucks, that are vital for humanitarian work. This destruction of machinery has further hampered efforts to assist the people of Gaza, making it even more difficult to provide basic services and relief.
As the situation worsens, the WFP has called on all parties to prioritize the needs of civilians and allow aid to enter Gaza immediately. With over 116,000 metric tonnes of food aid waiting to be delivered, the international community has urged Israel to lift the blockade to prevent further suffering and loss of life in the region. The people of Gaza, already living in dire conditions, are now facing the harsh reality of hunger and a lack of basic necessities.
