Under the direction of the Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddh Nagar and the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the Traffic Police carried out an extensive enforcement and road safety operation on December 15, 2025, combining strict action against traffic violations with preventive measures to reduce accident risks caused by dense winter fog, particularly on expressways and high-speed corridors across the district.
The large-scale drive reflected the administration’s dual strategy of enforcing traffic discipline through technology-driven challans and manual checks, while simultaneously prioritising public safety through awareness initiatives and operational interventions tailored to prevailing weather conditions. The campaign was aimed at improving compliance with traffic rules, reducing reckless driving behaviour and ensuring safer movement of vehicles during periods of reduced visibility.
Large-Scale Enforcement Drive and Technology-Enabled E-Challan Action
During the day-long enforcement campaign, the Traffic Police registered a total of 7,793 e-challans against traffic violators across Gautam Buddh Nagar. Of these, 3,068 challans were issued manually by traffic personnel deployed at key junctions, arterial roads and congestion-prone areas, while 4,725 challans were generated through the Integrated Smart Traffic Management System cameras. The extensive use of automated surveillance ensured wider coverage, consistent monitoring and objective enforcement without human discretion.
The drive focused on habitual and high-risk violations that contribute significantly to road accidents. Special attention was given to offences such as riding without helmets, overspeeding, triple riding on two-wheelers and non-use of seat belts. These violations were identified as major contributors to serious injuries and fatalities, especially during winter when fog and low visibility amplify risks.
As part of the special enforcement campaign, 2,963 challans were issued for riding without helmets, highlighting continued non-compliance despite repeated advisories. Triple riding on two-wheelers resulted in 213 challans, while 158 motorists were penalised for not wearing seat belts. Overspeeding, a critical safety concern on expressways and wide urban roads, led to 549 challans. These figures underscored the scale of violations and reinforced the need for sustained enforcement to instil road discipline.
In addition to challan action, the Traffic Police also seized 23 vehicles found involved in serious or repeated violations. Officials stated that vehicle seizure was carried out in cases where violations posed a direct threat to public safety or where previous penalties had failed to deter offenders. The combination of fines and seizures was intended to send a strong message that reckless behaviour on roads would not be tolerated.
Senior traffic officials noted that the enforcement drive was conducted with a focus on transparency and accountability. Personnel were instructed to adhere strictly to legal provisions while issuing challans and to ensure courteous behaviour with road users. The use of ISTMS cameras not only improved detection efficiency but also helped reduce disputes by providing digital evidence of violations.
Fog-Related Safety Measures, Convoy Operations and Public Awareness Efforts
Alongside enforcement, the Traffic Police implemented a series of preventive measures to mitigate the heightened risk of accidents caused by dense fog, which has become a recurring challenge during winter months in the region. On major expressways passing through Gautam Buddh Nagar, convoy systems were introduced to regulate vehicle movement during periods of extremely low visibility. Under this system, vehicles were guided in controlled groups at safe speeds, reducing the likelihood of sudden braking, pile-ups and chain collisions.
Traffic personnel were strategically deployed at entry and exit points of expressways to monitor visibility conditions and manage traffic flow accordingly. Officials stated that convoy operations were initiated proactively during early morning and late-night hours, when fog density is typically highest. These measures were aimed at maintaining smooth traffic movement while prioritising safety over speed.
As part of the safety campaign, reflective tapes were installed on vehicles to improve visibility in foggy conditions. Traffic teams conducted on-the-spot drives to encourage and assist drivers, particularly those operating commercial and heavy vehicles, to use reflective materials that enhance detection by other road users. The initiative was aligned with national road safety guidelines and was welcomed by many motorists who recognised its practical benefits.
Public awareness formed a key component of the day’s operations. Traffic personnel engaged with drivers and commuters to spread awareness on road safety under the theme “Road Safety, Life Protection,” emphasising the importance of following traffic rules, using safety gear and exercising caution during adverse weather. Motorists were advised to maintain safe distances, avoid sudden lane changes, use fog lights appropriately and refrain from unnecessary overtaking.
The awareness drive also focused on educating two-wheeler riders about the life-saving importance of helmets and discouraging dangerous practices such as triple riding. Car drivers were reminded about the mandatory use of seat belts, not only for drivers but also for passengers. Special emphasis was placed on overspeeding, with officers explaining how high speeds drastically reduce reaction time and increase accident severity, especially in fog.
Traffic officials stated that the campaign was part of an ongoing effort rather than a one-day exercise. Similar drives would continue throughout the winter season, combining enforcement, technological monitoring and public outreach. The objective, they said, was to create a culture of responsible driving where compliance with traffic rules is driven by awareness and concern for safety, not merely fear of penalties.
The December 15 operation demonstrated the Traffic Police’s commitment to proactive and adaptive traffic management in Gautam Buddh Nagar. By addressing both behavioural violations and environmental risks, the campaign aimed to reduce accidents, protect lives and ensure safer roads during one of the most challenging traffic seasons of the year.
