Tragedy struck in Alappuzha district, Kerala, on Monday night when a car carrying seven medical students collided with a state-owned Kerala State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) bus, resulting in the deaths of five students and critical injuries to two others. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. when the students, all first-year MBBS students at Vandanam Medical College, were traveling at high speed in a Chevrolet Tavera.

The force of the collision was so severe that it left the car completely wrecked, with visuals from the scene showing the twisted remains of the vehicle, its windows shattered, and the bus’ bonnet damaged. The impact was so intense that emergency responders had to use specialized equipment to cut through the mangled car to extricate the victims.

The five deceased students were identified as Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep. Three of the students died instantly at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to the hospital. Two additional students were critically injured in the crash and were immediately transported to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital for treatment. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest that the car was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it lost control, skidded, and collided with the oncoming bus.

The KSRTC bus, which was traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam, had four passengers on board. Fortunately, these individuals sustained only minor injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.

The horrific accident has left the local community and the medical college in mourning. The victims, all in their early twenties, were in the first year of their medical studies at Vandanam Medical College. Their untimely deaths have deeply shocked both their families and classmates, with tributes pouring in from across the region.

This tragic accident highlights the dangers of high-speed driving and the risks associated with overtaking on busy roads. As authorities continue their investigation into the incident, the loss of these promising young lives serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. The incident has sparked widespread grief and calls for better road safety measures in the state.
