  • Polaris Dawn crew completes historic commercial spacewalk and returns safely.
  • Mission reaches highest altitude by a crewed spacecraft since 1972.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has publicly celebrated the successful return of the Polaris Dawn crew after their groundbreaking private spacewalk mission. Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a photo of the crew, clad in spacesuits and beaming with excitement as they exited a helicopter following their landing in Florida. This marks a significant milestone in commercial space exploration, showcasing the advancement of private space travel.

The Polaris Dawn mission, which concluded on September 15, saw the crew’s successful splashdown off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, at approximately 03:37 local time (1:06 pm IST). This mission was notable for several achievements, including being the first to feature a commercial spacewalk. The crew spent five days in orbit, reaching a record-setting altitude of 870 miles (over 1,400 kilometers), the highest ever achieved by a crewed spacecraft since 1972.

SpaceX, which live-streamed the crew’s touchdown, confirmed the success of the mission with a tweet: “Splashdown of Dragon confirmed! Welcome back to Earth.” NASA also praised the mission, describing it as a “giant leap forward” for the commercial space industry, underscoring the progress made in private space travel and research.

Launched on September 10 aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, Polaris Dawn was a significant venture financed and led by billionaire-philanthropist Jared Isaacman. The mission’s crew included civilians Scott ‘Kidd’ Poteet, a retired US Air Force pilot, and SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon. Together, they pushed the boundaries of human space exploration by traveling further into space than any human has for over 50 years.

During their time in orbit, the crew conducted around 40 scientific experiments focused on human health and safety in microgravity. A key highlight of the Polaris Dawn mission was its historic spacewalk, during which Isaacman and Gillis tested new SpaceX spacesuits and evaluated their performance and mobility. This two-hour extravehicular activity (EVA) was a landmark event, providing crucial data for future commercial spacewalks and setting the stage for more ambitious space missions.

The Polaris Dawn mission’s success represents a new chapter in private space exploration, demonstrating the capabilities of commercial spaceflight and its potential for advancing scientific and technological research in space.
