In a shocking incident on New Year’s Day, a Tesla Cybertruck was exploded outside the Donald Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, and it has now been revealed that the generative AI tool, ChatGPT, was used to plan the attack. The attack, which involved a highly decorated soldier, Matthew Livelsberger, has raised concerns about the potential misuse of easily accessible artificial intelligence technologies.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Livelsberger, a 37-year-old member of the elite US special forces, died by suicide just before the truck exploded. The investigation into the explosion uncovered that Livelsberger had used the AI chatbot, ChatGPT, to gather information on a variety of topics related to explosives, including the legality of fireworks in Arizona and details about explosive targets. Authorities revealed that Livelsberger’s intent was not to harm anyone, but rather to conduct the explosion himself.

In a press statement, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department highlighted the disturbing potential for misuse of generative AI like ChatGPT, which can easily be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. “We found that Livelsberger used the AI tool to obtain information that aided his actions,” McMahill said. “While it appears that he did not intend to harm others, the fact that AI was involved in planning such an event is concerning.”

Livelsberger’s actions on New Year’s Day were nothing short of alarming. The soldier rented a Tesla vehicle, which he filled with fuel containers and fireworks, and proceeded to set off the explosion, ultimately leading to his death. Seven people were injured in the blast, although their injuries were not life-threatening.

Further investigation revealed that a week after the explosion, police discovered that Livelsberger had used ChatGPT to search for specific details about explosive targets, the velocity of different types of ammunition, and the legalities of fireworks in Arizona. These searches, according to the authorities, provided insight into how the soldier had gathered information to build his explosive device.

Sheriff McMahill called the use of generative AI a “game-changer” and stated that this was possibly the first documented incident on US soil in which ChatGPT had been used by an individual to construct a device. The event has sparked concern about the wider implications of AI technology and its potential use in illegal activities.

“This is the first case that we’re aware of where ChatGPT was utilized to help build a specific device,” McMahill noted. “It’s troubling, and we’re sharing this information with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that such an event doesn’t happen again.”

In response to the situation, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, issued a statement emphasizing that the tool was designed with safeguards to prevent harmful or illegal activities. The company confirmed that ChatGPT had provided information that was already publicly available on the internet, including warnings against engaging in harmful actions.

“ChatGPT is designed to refuse harmful instructions, and in this case, it provided publicly available information along with warnings against dangerous or illegal activities,” said OpenAI in a statement. “We are actively working with law enforcement to assist with the ongoing investigation.”

ChatGPT, launched in 2022 by the San Francisco-based startup OpenAI, has garnered significant attention for its ability to generate human-like text and assist with a wide range of tasks. Unlike previous AI models, ChatGPT is free for anyone with an internet connection, making it easily accessible to individuals across the world. This accessibility has raised concerns among experts, who fear that such tools could be misused for illegal or harmful purposes, as seen in this incident.

The involvement of ChatGPT in this attack has raised significant questions about the regulation of AI technologies and the need for better safeguards to prevent misuse. As authorities continue their investigation, it is clear that the potential for AI tools to be used in criminal activities will be a matter of serious concern in the future. OpenAI’s commitment to ensuring responsible use of its tools is now under greater scrutiny as the investigation progresses, with many calling for more stringent measures to prevent AI from being used in harmful ways.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are working together to better understand how generative AI was used in this case and to explore ways of preventing similar incidents in the future. The explosion outside the Donald Trump International Hotel marks a turning point in the conversation about AI safety and its implications for public safety.
