Former President Donald Trump’s name will appear on the ballot for the first time since his conviction on felony charges, as several states hold the final Republican presidential primary contests of 2024.
Donald Trump will be featured on the ballot in Republican primaries in Montana, New Jersey, and New Mexico, while President Joe Biden, the presumed Democratic nominee, will compete in primaries in those states as well as in Washington, DC, and South Dakota.
In Washington, DC, Republicans held a party-run primary in March, while South Dakota canceled its GOP presidential primary due to Donald Trump being uncontested.
Voters will also participate in primary races for federal, state, and local offices in these states.
Although both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are expected to win easily, the results may indicate voter concerns about their choices as the November election approaches.
If Donald Trump’s victory margins are narrower than anticipated, it could suggest apprehensions among voters about nominating a presidential candidate with a felony record.
Meanwhile, Presidnet Biden has faced protest votes in recent contests from Democratic voters dissatisfied with his handling of Israel’s conflict with Hamas.
After these primaries, Democrats have two more caucuses on June 8, for Guam and the US Virgin Islands, to conclude their 2024 primary calendar.
Beyond the presidential contests, states are conducting primary elections for federal and local races. One of the most closely watched races is the Republican Senate race in Montana, where retired Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy has Donald Trump’s endorsement.
In New Jersey, Democrats will select a candidate to replace Senator Bob Menendez, who is facing federal corruption charges. Five Democrats are vying for the nomination in the state’s 3rd District, which is expected to remain in Democratic hands.
In New Mexico, Republicans will compete to challenge incumbent Melanie Stansbury in the 1st District, while in DC, voters will decide on the city’s nonvoting delegate to the US House.
In Iowa, voters will choose nominees for local races and US House seats, including the closely watched contest in the 3rd Congressional District.
These primary results will provide insight into the political landscape as the country heads towards the general election.
