World No. 2 Novak Djokovic is eagerly anticipating a potential showdown with his long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the Round 2 of the tennis tournament at the Paris Olympics 2024. In a recent interview, Novak Djokovic expressed his hope to face Rafael Nadal on the clay courts, describing the possible encounter as their “probable last dance together.”
Both players are set to compete in the early rounds of the tournament, with Novak Djokovic drawn against Australian Matthew Ebden and Rafael Nadal scheduled to face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. The winners of these matches will face each other in the Round 2. If the two meet, it would mark their 60th clash across all major competitions.
Novak Djokovic reflected on the potential match, saying, “Yeah, I mean, obviously he [Rafael Nadal] hasn’t played much and his ranking drops. So, you know, there’s always going to be that possibility of meeting him in early rounds and there we go, you know, it’s going to be a spectacle. Definitely, if we get to meet, expect some fireworks on the court. Like the good old times. I hope we get to meet because there will probably be one last dance for both of us.”
Acknowledging Rafael Nadal’s prowess on clay, Novak Djokovic praised the Spaniard, noting, “All the respect to Rafa, of course, he’s just, he was injured and everything, but he’s always the king of clay and what he’s done here in Roland Garros is unprecedented. So I can’t wait to step on the court with everyone is so excited for it.”
The Novak Djokovic-Nadal rivalry is one of the most intense in tennis history, with Novak Djokovic currently leading 30-29. Their last encounter took place during the 2022 French Open quarter-finals, where Rafael Nadal emerged victorious. Rafael Nadal holds a significant advantage over Novak Djokovic on clay courts, with a record of 20-8.
Rafael Nadal, who expressed excitement about returning to Paris, emphasized the significance of representing one’s country at the Olympics. He described the Olympic Games as the “oldest and most important historical sports event,” noting the honor of participating in such a prestigious competition.
Novak Djokovic, who won gold in singles at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and in doubles with Marc Lopez at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, also highlighted the importance of the Olympic Games. He remarked, “The Olympic Games have always been the highest priority of mine and many other tennis players. So we’re just blessed, we’re just blessed to really be a global sport that attracts a lot of attention. And hopefully, we can see the stands full for all the matches.”
As anticipation builds for the Paris Olympics, tennis fans are eagerly awaiting the possibility of witnessing another epic chapter in the Novak Djokovic-Rafael Nadal rivalry.
