India is facing a diplomatic and economic flashpoint after US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing India’s continued oil trade with Russia. The move, which raises duties on several Indian exports to as high as 50%, has triggered strong pushback from New Delhi and also prompted a bold response from India’s former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, who described the crisis as a “once in a generation opportunity” to accelerate long-pending reforms. While India slammed the tariffs as unfair and unjustified, the situation has now evolved into both a foreign policy challenge and a moment of potential domestic economic transformation.

Donald Trump Tariff Triggers Strong Political Response

The controversy began when Donald Trump issued an executive order to impose an additional 25% tariff on a range of Indian products. These goods, primarily from the textiles, leather, and marine sectors, were already subject to existing duties. With the new hike, tariffs on some products are now set to climb to 50%, significantly increasing the cost burden on Indian exports to the US. Donald Trump justified the decision by accusing India of continuing its procurement of Russian crude oil despite geopolitical tensions and Western sanctions.

India reacted sharply to this move. In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) denounced the new tariffs as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” warning that they threaten the country’s economic and strategic interests. The government also accused Washington of singling out India while several other countries are also purchasing Russian crude oil to meet their own energy needs. New Delhi made it clear that its energy trade decisions are based on market dynamics and focused on the critical goal of ensuring energy security for its population of over 1.4 billion.

The MEA’s response highlighted that oil imports from Russia were not a political decision but a pragmatic one aimed at keeping inflation in check and ensuring uninterrupted access to affordable energy. “It is extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” the statement read.

Amitabh Kant Frames Tariff Row as Reform Opportunity

Amid this geopolitical tension, Amitabh Kant, India’s former G20 Sherpa and one of the key architects of India’s economic diplomacy during its G20 presidency, struck a radically different tone. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Amitabh Kant said, “Donald Trump has provided us a once in a generation opportunity to take the next big leap on reforms. Crisis must be fully utilised.”

Amitabh Kant’s remarks reflect a philosophy often attributed to past reform waves in India: that external pressure or crises can serve as catalysts for internal transformation. During the 1991 balance of payments crisis, for example, India undertook landmark economic liberalisation reforms. Similarly, Amitabh Kant’s statement suggests that this new trade pressure from the US could push India to re-examine inefficiencies in its export sectors, boost competitiveness, and diversify trade relations.

Analysts interpret his words as a call to not merely react defensively but to use the moment as an inflection point. This could involve structural changes in India’s manufacturing policies, trade diversification towards new markets, greater investment in technology, and enhanced ease of doing business. By reducing dependence on traditional trade partners and legacy industries, India could use the crisis to emerge stronger and more resilient in global trade.

The broader policy community has taken note of Amitabh Kant’s suggestion, with some industry leaders quietly echoing his sentiment. The logic: if India can modernize its sectors most affected by the tariffs, particularly textiles and leather, it could position itself better for global value chains, moving up the ladder from low-cost manufacturing to value-added production.

Yet, this will require more than vision. Implementation of major reforms in logistics, export credit, product quality, and free trade agreements will be critical if India wants to seize the opportunity presented by the crisis.

While the MEA has focused on the geopolitical angle, Amitabh Kant’s comments open a new economic dimension to the debate—one that turns adversity into a springboard for structural transformation.

As tensions between India and the US escalate over the energy trade issue, what remains to be seen is whether New Delhi will use this crisis as merely a defensive moment or turn it into a proactive agenda for reform. One thing is clear: the stakes are high, and India’s response could define its economic trajectory for years to come.
