New Delhi, 1 April 2026: Acting on the directions of Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, the Food Safety Department of the Government of NCT of Delhi has intensified its surveillance, inspection, and enforcement activities across the national capital to ensure the availability of safe and hygienic food for the public. The move reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and strengthening consumer confidence through strict monitoring mechanisms and a zero-tolerance approach towards food adulteration.

Large-Scale Sampling and Positive Compliance Reports

As part of its routine inspection and special surveillance drives, the department collected a total of 98 food samples from various food business operators across different districts of Delhi. These samples covered a broad spectrum of commonly consumed food items, including sweets, dairy products, spices, and essential commodities that are widely used by households across the city. The initiative aims to monitor food quality at multiple points in the supply chain and ensure that only safe and compliant products reach consumers.

Out of the total samples collected, 54 have been analyzed by the Food Safety Laboratory so far. Encouragingly, all tested samples have been found to conform to the prescribed food safety standards, with no reports of unsafe or substandard food products. The remaining samples are currently under examination, and their results are awaited. Officials have stated that this high level of compliance indicates the effectiveness of continuous monitoring and regulatory enforcement carried out by the department.

The Health Minister reiterated that ensuring safe and hygienic food for every citizen remains a top priority. He emphasized that strict vigilance is being maintained across all districts and that authorities have been directed to take immediate and stringent action against any violations of food safety norms.

Focused Monitoring During Navratri Festive Period

In addition to routine inspections, the department carried out extensive and targeted surveillance during the Navratri period, when the consumption of specific food items increases significantly. Special attention was given to products commonly consumed during fasting, such as kuttu atta, singhara atta, sabudana, fruits, and dairy items. These inspections were conducted to prevent any compromise in quality during a time when demand is high and supply chains are under pressure.

Special drives were organized across markets, mandis, retail outlets, JJ clusters, and unauthorized colonies to ensure that food sold in high footfall areas meets safety and hygiene standards. During this period, a total of 165 food samples were collected, which included 138 surveillance samples and 27 enforcement samples. These actions were taken under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which provides the legal framework for regulating food safety in the country.

Laboratory analysis of these samples indicated a high level of compliance, with the majority of food products meeting the required standards. In cases where non-conformance was detected, appropriate legal action has been initiated in accordance with the established regulatory procedures. Authorities confirmed that no major violations or untoward incidents were reported during the festive season, highlighting the success of proactive monitoring and enforcement.

Zero Tolerance Policy on Adulteration

The Food Safety Department has reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance policy towards food adulteration and unsafe practices. Officials have made it clear that any attempt to compromise food quality will be dealt with firmly through legal action and enforcement measures. Regular inspections, surprise checks, and targeted surveillance drives will continue across all districts to ensure ongoing compliance.

The initiative is being implemented under the broader leadership of Rekha Gupta, with a focus on strengthening food safety systems and enhancing regulatory oversight. Authorities emphasized that public health and consumer safety remain non-negotiable priorities and that sustained efforts will be made to maintain the highest standards of food quality in the capital.

The department has also urged food business operators to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and maintain hygiene standards at all stages of food handling and distribution. Citizens have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or substandard food products to the authorities.

With continuous monitoring, robust enforcement, and coordinated efforts, the Food Safety Department aims to ensure that residents of Delhi have access to safe, hygienic, and high-quality food at all times. The ongoing initiatives are expected to further strengthen the city’s food safety ecosystem and reinforce trust among consumers.
