Emphasis on Water Conservation and Organic Farming
Delhi’s Social Welfare, SC and ST Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh said that preserving Delhi’s traditional water bodies—earlier known as johads and ponds and now referred to as water bodies—is essential for improving groundwater levels and water quality.
He noted that excessive use of chemical fertilizers in recent years has impacted the environment and public health. However, under the guidance of the Prime Minister, farmers are increasingly shifting towards organic farming. He added that farmers in Delhi are also adopting organic practices, which is a positive development.
The Minister emphasized that organic produce must receive fair market value to ensure economic viability and encourage more farmers to transition to sustainable farming. He also praised the steps being taken by the Chief Minister under the “Green Delhi” initiative, stating that it will benefit both farmers and the environment.
Despite rapid urbanization, around 50,000 hectares of land in Delhi is still under cultivation, and farmers continue to play a vital role in the city’s economy. The Minister expressed confidence that collaborative efforts can help make Delhi cleaner, greener and healthier while promoting sustainable farming practices.
