Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts in regional diplomatic initiatives, particularly concerning issues related to Iran and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The discussion comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, where diplomatic engagement between Iran, the United States, and regional stakeholders remains a critical factor in maintaining energy security and preventing further escalation.

Pakistan’s Role in Iran Mediation Efforts

During the conversation, Pakistan briefed China on its recent diplomatic activities aimed at facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. Islamabad has reportedly been playing a behind-the-scenes role in encouraging negotiations and easing tensions between the two countries.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar expressed gratitude for China’s support and reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening coordination with Beijing in promoting peace and stability in the region.

He emphasized that Pakistan seeks to contribute constructively to diplomatic efforts that aim to reduce tensions and ensure regional security, particularly around critical maritime routes.

China’s Strategic Emphasis on Regional Stability

Wang Yi reiterated China’s “principled position” on regional conflicts and commended Pakistan for its role in facilitating dialogue efforts, including discussions that have helped extend temporary ceasefire arrangements.

China has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions in regional conflicts, positioning itself as a supporter of dialogue-based conflict resolution rather than military escalation.

Wang Yi emphasized that Pakistan should continue to build confidence among negotiating parties and contribute actively toward restoring long-term peace in the region. He noted that such efforts align with broader international expectations for stability in strategically sensitive areas such as the Middle East and the Gulf region.

Focus on Strait of Hormuz and Energy Security

A key aspect of the discussion centered on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes. The waterway plays a vital role in global energy supply chains, with a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it.

China’s concern over stability in this region reflects its heavy dependence on global energy imports. Any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz can have significant implications for global oil prices and supply chains, affecting both developed and emerging economies.

Wang Yi’s remarks highlighted the importance of diplomatic engagement in ensuring that maritime routes remain open and secure, and that tensions in the region do not escalate into broader conflict.

China–Pakistan Strategic Partnership Reinforced

The conversation also reaffirmed the close strategic relationship between China and Pakistan, which both sides describe as an “all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.”

The two countries are preparing to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, an event expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and strategic domains.

China emphasized the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges, strengthening mutual trust, and enhancing coordination on international platforms such as the United Nations.

Pakistan, in response, expressed its commitment to deepening cooperation with China across multiple sectors, including diplomacy, trade, and regional security coordination.

Multilateral Diplomacy and Global Positioning

Wang Yi also stressed the importance of joint action by China and Pakistan on multilateral platforms. He said both countries should work together to promote a shared position on global issues and support multilateralism in an increasingly complex international environment.

This aligns with China’s broader foreign policy approach, which encourages collaboration among developing nations and supports a multipolar global order.

Pakistan echoed this sentiment, stating that it aims to work closely with China to advance shared interests and contribute to global peace initiatives through coordinated diplomatic efforts.

Iran Talks and Regional Diplomatic Dynamics

Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States reflects its growing role as a regional diplomatic intermediary. While not a primary negotiating party, Islamabad has attempted to leverage its relationships with both sides to encourage communication and de-escalation.

China’s endorsement of Pakistan’s role signals support for such intermediary diplomacy, particularly at a time when direct negotiations between major stakeholders remain sensitive and complex.

The ongoing discussions around Iran’s nuclear concerns, regional security, and maritime stability continue to shape diplomatic engagements in West Asia.

Conclusion

The latest communication between Wang Yi and Pakistan’s foreign minister underscores the evolving diplomatic coordination between China and Pakistan in addressing regional tensions, particularly those involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

By encouraging Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts, China has reinforced its preference for dialogue-driven solutions to geopolitical challenges. At the same time, the conversation highlights the strategic importance of energy security, maritime stability, and multilateral cooperation in an increasingly interconnected global order.
