Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian engaged in diplomatic discussions with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, underscoring the importance of bilateral relations and addressing regional challenges.
During the meeting, Amirabdollahian highlighted the agreement between Iran and Sri Lanka to convene a joint economic commission, praising President Wickremesinghe’s support for implementing the commission’s agreements. He emphasized Iran’s readiness to enhance cooperation, particularly in economic and industrial sectors like energy.
Expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people, Amirabdollahian commended Sri Lanka’s principled stance on the Gaza conflict, stressing the urgent need to halt Israeli aggression and restore Palestinian rights. Additionally, he reiterated Iran’s commitment to maritime security in international waters, emphasizing its significance for regional stability.
In response, President Wickremesinghe acknowledged Iran’s strategic importance as a gateway to Central Asia and its significant achievements. He emphasized the necessity of strengthening economic ties between Sri Lanka and Iran, recognizing the mutual benefits of increased collaboration.
Addressing developments in Gaza, President Wickremesinghe reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s opposition to demographic changes in the West Bank and Gaza, underscoring the country’s commitment to upholding Palestinian rights.
Additionally, the Iranian Foreign Minister who is on a visit to Sri Lanka also held meeting with Sri Lankan Prime Minster Dinesh Gunawardena.
During the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized, “The will of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to develop all-round relations with Sri Lanka; and, we do not have any restrictions in this regard.”
The Sri Lankan Prime Minister for his part, also expressed satisfaction with Iranian FM’s visit to Sri Lanka and described as significant the progress of Iran in various industrial, scientific, and technological fields.
He emphasized Colombo’s interest in making more use of the technical-engineering services offered by Iran.
He further added, Sri Lanka considered it important to use the experiences of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding renewable energies.
