In a significant boost to urban mobility in the National Capital Region, the central government has approved the extension of the Noida Metro Rail project. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the proposal for an 11.56-kilometre-long metro extension corridor from Sector 142 to the Botanical Garden Metro Station. The new corridor will be fully elevated and will comprise eight new metro stations.
Officials said the project aims to enhance seamless connectivity between Noida and Delhi by integrating key residential, commercial and IT hubs with the existing metro network. At present, limited metro access beyond Sector 142 forces commuters to rely heavily on road transport, contributing to traffic congestion and longer travel times. The extension is expected to significantly reduce this burden.
The eight proposed stations will cater to densely populated and rapidly developing zones, ensuring improved access for office-goers, students and residents. Urban planners believe that better metro connectivity will also spur economic activity, attract fresh investments and generate employment opportunities in the region.
The project will be implemented by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation with support from both the central and state governments. Authorities have indicated that construction will be carried out in phases, with careful planning to minimise disruption to traffic and local communities.
From an environmental perspective, the metro extension is expected to play a crucial role in promoting sustainable transportation. By encouraging a shift from private vehicles to public transit, the project could help reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality across the region.
Residents and industry representatives have welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, calling it a long-awaited move that will transform daily commuting patterns. The direct metro link between Sector 142 and Botanical Garden is expected to cut travel time significantly and offer a reliable alternative to congested road routes.
With this approval, the government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening urban infrastructure and developing Noida as a well-connected, modern city. The metro extension corridor is seen as a key step toward achieving integrated and efficient public transport in the Delhi-NCR region.
