After nearly two weeks of intense hostilities between Iran and Israel, a fragile ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump is holding, offering a glimmer of hope for long-term peace in a region gripped by escalating tensions. Though both nations have claimed victory, international observers remain cautious about the durability of the truce. Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, has described U.S.-Iran peace talks as “promising,” suggesting a rare opportunity for diplomacy following the airstrikes and missile attacks that marked one of the most dangerous episodes in recent Middle Eastern history.
Muted Optimism Amid Contradictory Claims
Witkoff revealed that conversations with Iran are ongoing, both directly and through intermediaries, and expressed confidence in achieving a comprehensive peace deal. “The conversations are promising. We are hopeful that we can have a long-term peace agreement that resurrects Iran,” he said in a televised interview.
However, this optimism contrasts with internal assessments within the Donald Trump administration. While Donald Trump boasted that U.S. stealth bombers had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, a classified Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) report paints a different picture. According to sources familiar with the document, U.S. strikes only sealed the entrances to two nuclear facilities but did not destroy underground structures. Some centrifuges reportedly remain intact, indicating the program may have only suffered a temporary setback of one to two months.
Meanwhile, the White House has dismissed these findings, calling the DIA assessment “flat out wrong.” Israel, for its part, claims the strikes removed an existential nuclear threat. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that both Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities had been neutralized, though this too is debated among international analysts.
Mixed Signals from Tehran and Tel Aviv
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian labeled the end of hostilities a “great victory” and signaled a willingness to mend ties with the U.S., informing Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that Tehran is open to resolving differences. Iran has denied pursuing nuclear weapons and insists its enrichment program is for civilian use only.
During the 12-day war, Israel initiated a surprise attack on June 13, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and eliminating key military leaders. Iran retaliated with a barrage of missiles aimed at Israeli cities and military bases, resulting in 28 Israeli deaths. Iranian officials claim 610 fatalities and over 4,700 injuries from Israeli strikes.
Amid the chaos, Iran has reportedly arrested 700 individuals for alleged links to Israel and executed three men for espionage-related offenses. Despite these developments, both nations eventually accepted the ceasefire, albeit with mutual accusations of initial violations.
On the ground, signs of de-escalation have emerged. Israel lifted nationwide military restrictions, and Ben Gurion Airport resumed operations. Similarly, Iran reopened its airspace, as reported by state-affiliated media.
Cautious Calm and Continued Tensions
Donald Trump, while taking credit for brokering the ceasefire, reprimanded both Iran and Israel, particularly urging the latter to exercise restraint. Israeli officials assured the U.S. that the truce would be respected unless breached by Iran. Iranian leaders echoed similar sentiments, saying the ceasefire would hold as long as Israel refrained from further aggression.
Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir described the conclusion of a “significant chapter” in the conflict but emphasized that operations against Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza would continue. Meanwhile, oil prices saw a slight recovery, reflecting investor confidence that the Strait of Hormuz blockade risk had subsided, at least temporarily.
While the ceasefire offers momentary relief, the situation remains fragile and dependent on the success of ongoing diplomatic efforts, which may determine whether the region moves toward reconciliation or returns to conflict.
