New Delhi, 6 September (HS): The Central Government has come up with the Battery Energy Storage System Scheme to increase the energy storage capacity of the country. Its objective is to increase the capacity to store energy obtained from renewable energy sources.
This plan to develop a capacity of 4 thousand megawatt hours by 2030–31 was approved in the union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
Giving information about the decisions of the Cabinet, union Minister Anurag Thakur said that under the Viability Gap Funding Scheme, 40 percent of the capital cost will be given as financial assistance as budgetary support. For this, the government has initially fixed Rs 9,400 crore, of which the budgetary support is Rs 3760 crore. The plan will reduce the cost of battery storage systems and make them last longer. Out of this, 85 percent of the benefits will be given to the discom companies so that their benefits reach consumers.
