A Border Security Force (BSF) soldier sustained injuries after Pakistani forces violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu on Wednesday, according to reports from news agency PTI.
The incident occurred at around 2:35 a.m. in the Akhnoor area, where Pakistani forces initiated unprovoked firing. Indian troops promptly retaliated, providing a strong response to the Pakistani Rangers. There were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries on the Pakistani side.
A spokesperson for the BSF confirmed the incident, stating, “At about 2:35 a.m., an incident of unprovoked firing in the Akhnoor area from across the border happened, and it was befittingly responded to by the BSF. One BSF personnel sustained injuries in Pakistani firing.”
Following the ceasefire violation, Indian troops stationed along the International Border and the LoC were placed on high alert to prevent any further escalation.
While the frequency of ceasefire violations has significantly reduced since the 2021 renewal of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, this marks a concerning incident. Last year, a BSF soldier was killed in the Ramgarh sector during a ceasefire breach, the first fatality on the Indian side in over three years.
The latest ceasefire violation comes as Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its first Assembly election in a decade. The three-phase election is set to begin on September 18, with subsequent phases on September 25 and October 1. Vote counting is scheduled for October 8.
