In a bid to correct course after its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a clear directive to its members: refrain from making insensitive remarks about Dalits and reservations. The central leadership has asked party workers to strengthen grassroots outreach, embrace Dr BR Ambedkar as a key ideological figure, and ensure consistent communication with Scheduled Caste (SC) communities across the country.
Post-poll introspection triggers cautionary stance
The advisory comes after the party noted that controversial statements by some leaders before the elections, coupled with speculation about constitutional amendments, may have alienated a section of Dalit voters. The BJP, which has traditionally worked to broaden its base among marginalized communities, believes such narratives were counterproductive to its mission of inclusive development. Consequently, the leadership is now focused on recalibrating its approach to social justice.
The shift was evident during a recent strategy meeting at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, which was attended by top party figures including president JP Nadda, organisation general secretary BL Santhosh, Union ministers, and senior leaders from various states. The gathering was held to plan nationwide celebrations around Dr BR Ambedkar’s upcoming birth anniversary and to strengthen ties with Dalit communities through mohalla and locality-level outreach initiatives.
Engagement and representation as key strategies
Leaders present at the meeting were advised to closely monitor the prevailing sentiments among Scheduled Castes in their respective regions and maintain regular contact with community members. The party intends to highlight the government’s commitment to Ambedkar’s values, social justice, and constitutional integrity, particularly in the wake of public discourse that has questioned these positions.
Several Dalit leaders within the BJP welcomed the renewed focus but also emphasized that the party must ensure better representation of SC members within its organizational structure. They believe that enhancing Dalit visibility in decision-making roles would not only reinforce trust but also help convey the party’s message more effectively.
